WE MEET AGAIN - GORNAL ATHLETIC

“The Colemen” and “The Peacocks” had never met in a league game before last season. Gornal were in the Midland Combination for 12 seasons but this was prior to Coleshill joining the Mid Com in 1975 so the two teams managed to avoid each other at that level. Since coming together in the Midland Alliance each team won 1-0 away from home in the 2012/13 season and then this year Coleshill ran out comfortable winners on the opeing game of the season, the best first day result since 1947.
They have also met once before in the FA Vase, or should I say twice, as it took a replay to separate the sides.
NB. This is according to my data but of course if you know different please let me know!

Sunday Mercury Wrote:
Coleshill Fired By Rossiter
Despite the incentive of a sixth minute lead – scored in fine style by their best forward Dave Shaw – complacent Gornal were humiliated in this FA Vase 1st Round Replay. Casual play allowed Coleshill to net a 12th minute equaliser through Steve Jones. John Rossiter then put them into the lead in the 18th minute. Bad marking by the home defence led to Coleshill’s third goal before the break, Gary Mottram lifted a free kick over a wall and defender Steve Taylor handled. Colin Holder made no mistake from the spot. Otherwise reliable keeper Peter Leeson was himself guilty of complacency in the 81st minute when he allowed a shot from Rossiter to slip from his grasp for Coleshill’s fourth.

NB. Colin Holder was later to become Coleshill’s manager when they lifted the Walsall Senior Cup in 1983.

Town went on to play Bridgnorth Town in the 1st Round but lost at home 2-1, Rossiter again the scorer.
