WE MEET AGAIN - HIGHGATE UNITED

RESULTS UPDATED 9th August 2021

Coleshill meet possibly their closest, fiercest and definitely their longest rivals, at Pack Meadow on Saturday 14th September 2013.

Highgate were formed in 1948, ironically by a group of orphans from Father Hudson's Homes in Coleshill. They played in the South Birmingham League but in 1964 they joined the then Worcestershire Combination, later to become the Midland Combination, after moving to Tythebarn Lane.

Coleshill Town joined them in the Mid Com's top flight in 1975 and from then the two teams have met every year, apart from 2000/01 when Coleshill dropped into Div 1 for a season, and after all those years of trying, they even made the step up to the Alliance together.

In all Highgate spent 43 seasons in the Mid Com, winning the title 3 times, and playing more than 1600 games, outstripping Coleshill's 32 seasons and nearly 1200 games. Only Walsall Wood(now in the Alliance), Northfield, West Midlands Police and Knowle, who are all still playing in the Com, could compete with those figures.

In total the two teams have met 78 times, 74 league and four cup matches, with Highgate coming out on top. Indeed, records would suggest Highgate are a bit of a bogey side to Coleshill. In the last 23 meetings Town have only won four times, and even in the year that Coleshill finally lifted the Mid Com Title they lost to the Gate three times (once in the Challenge Cup). On the bright side, that year, after losing to the Gate at Pack Meadow, the Colemen then went on a 12 game unbeaten run to pip Highgate to the championship on the last day of the season.

Neither side have pulled up any trees since promotion to the Alliance and last season was a real struggle for both sides, Coleshill finishing 15th with 13 wins, four places and five points above Highgate in the fourth from bottom position with 11 wins. Coleshill have finished above Highgate every one of the five seasons they have both been in the Alliance.

This season Highgate are flying! They sit on top of the pile with 19 points from their nine games with only two defeats, Tividale and Sphinx. They have a lethal strike force with Lei Brown on 9 goals and Shane Benjamin on 8. Coleshill are six points behind Gate but, due to cup games, have two games in hand and will be more than happy with their start to the season sitting comfortably in 9th place.
