WE MEET AGAIN - Racing Club Warwick

WE MEET AGAIN – RACING CLUB WARWICK

Racing Club Warwick were first established in 1919 under the name Saltisford Rovers and changed to their current name in 1970 an easy step to make seeing as their ground is on the Warwick Race Course. They made it into the top division of the Midland Combination in 1972, three seasons before Coleshill but from the 1975/76 season the two sides met at that level for 14 years until Racing gained promotion to the Southern League. Warwick came back to the Com for the 2008/09 season, the year Coleshill won the Championship and that was the last time the two sides met. They also met in the Birmingham Senior Cup around 2000! I haven't got the dates but Racing were in the Southern League and Coleshill three leagues below in the Midland Combination Division 1. The first game was at Warwick and ended 2-2. Town lost the replay 2-1 but a good night was had by all! Anyway, my records for the period the sides were in the same league the first time is very poor and out of the 28 games I only have record of 10 results!

1983/84 Season – Coleshill were fresh from winning the Walsall Senior Cup the season before and Manager Colin Holder was building a decent side but the campaign got off to a bad start with three straight defeats to Studley Sporting, Mile Oak Rovers and Paget Rangers. A 1-0 win away to Smethwick Highfield, a goal by John Mann, got things back on track and then Racing Club Warwick came to Pack Meadow on Saturday 27th August. Goals by captain Bob Dyer and a John Mann double secured a fine win and Coleshill only suffered three more defeats from then until February, RCW got revenge by winning the return game 3-1, to go top of the Midland Combination for the first time in the club’s history. Studley pushed Town all the way and on the final day of the season Coleshill travelled to Hurley Daw Mill needing a win to claim the title. Coleshill took the lead through Roy Ashman but the Mill equalised in the closing minutes and Studley were Champions. Coleshill had to wait another 24 years to final lift the Midland Combination Trophy.
