WE MEET AGAIN - HOLWELL SPORTS

Holwell Sports FC is based in Asfordby, near Melton Mowbray, Leicestershire, England.
Established in 1904 as Holwell Works F.C. they changed their name to their present name of Holwell Sports in 1988.

Holwell Sports are in the East Midlands Counties League (Level 6) and while Town were battling against Long Eaton United, Holwell beat fellow Midland Alliance side Rocester, AET, on Saturday 16th November to reach the 3rd Round of the FA Vase. They also beat Quorn in the 1st Qualifying round this season. Sports have reached the 2nd round of the FA Vase three times in their history, the last time was thanks to goals from Gary Drake and Leigh Fox and a man of the match performance from fans favourite Andy Teare. However, Holwell have never made it to the 3rd round of the Vase before and Coleshill have only ever been there once before, 2007.

The East Midlands Counties League only started in 2008/09 and was made up of 9 teams from the Central Midlands League, 8 from the Leicestershire Senior League and 2 from the Northern Counties League. It is now an official feeder league into the Midland Alliance.

Holwell moved from the Leicester Senior League to the EMC league (Level 6) the same year, 2008, as Coleshill were promoted to the Midland Alliance (Level 5). Since then they have finished 7th, 13th, 13th, 11th and 5th. Compare that with Coleshill's 11th, 8th, 12th, 17th and 15th.

This season the two sides currently have a record of:

Holwell S P15 W7 D1 L7 F37 A30 Pts22 Pos10/19
Coleshill P18 W7 D7 L4 F37 A21 Pts28 Pos7/22

While Coleshill were impressing in a fine 3-1 away win in their last game at Alvechurch, Holwell also won, 2-1 at home to Holbrook Sports.

We have played Sports before, also in the FA Vase, back in 1991 when after a 1-1 draw at Pack Meadow, Holwell went through to the next round winning by 3-2

Saturday 7th September 1991
F.A.Vase Extra Preliminary Round
Coleshill Town 1 v 1 Holwell Sports After Extra Time.
Attendance: 56.
Scorers:
Town: Cockerill.
Sports: Kee.
Teams:
Coleshill Town: Mark Hart, Malcolm Teeling, Colin Cooke, Kevin Welsh, Jamie Harden, Darren Washbourne, Steve Whipps, Jim Rossborough, Eddie Whinnery, Ian Cockerill, Tom Daly. Subs Eddie Barnes, Neil Hughes.

Holwell Sports: Humphreys, Saxby, Dawson, Collington, Megg, Spencer, Newton C, Williams, Kee, Newton P, Bone. Subs Beasey, Young.

SPORTS ARGUS WROTE:
An even first half saw few scoring although Cooke hit the crossbar twice for Coleshill. In the 30th minute Teeling’s free kick was headed on by Welsh and Whinnery hit the side netting with a firm shot on the turn. Ten minutes later neat play on the Holwell left led to Newton shooting just wide for the visitors and two minutes from half time after a corner by Rossborough, Whinnery turned the centre half only for his shot to be cleared off the line.
Half Time: Coleshill Town 0 v0 Holwell Sports.

SUNDAY MERCURY WROTE:
An equaliser two minutes from the end of extra time earned Holwell a replay. In the 92nd minute, Cockerill put Coleshill ahead after a through ball from Teeling. But with two minutes left, T.Kee equalised for Holwell to set up a replay on Wednesday night.

COLESHILL HERALD WROTE:
Coleshill Town were robbed of a place in the next round of the FA Vase by a goal two minutes from the end of extra time on Saturday. There had been little between the two sides in the first 90 minutes but within a couple of minutes of the restart the pack Meadowers looked to be heading for a fine win when Cockerill shot them into the lead. The Town side hung on to that with determination but just when it looked as though they were through up popped Kee to give Holwell the draw and a replay on Wednesday night.

Wednesday 11th September 1991
F.A Vase Extra Preliminary Round Replay
Holwell Sports 3 v 2 Coleshill Town
Attendance: 204.
Holwell lost in the next round, Preliminary, away to Halesowen Harriers 4-2, attendance 87.
I have searched for some details for the replay but unfortunately can’t come up with anything other than the result! I will keep trying!
