THIS WEEK 2013/14 - 25,50 and 100 YEARS AGO WEEK 18

1988/89
Saturday 10th December 1988
Birmingham Senior Cup
Coleshill Town 0 v 0 Birmingham City

SUNDAY MERCURY WROTE
Coleshill Town earned a replay after giving a fighting display against a Birmingham City side which included five players with Football League experience. Coleshill almost took the lead after seven minutes. Paul Mulholland took advantage of a through ball from Tony Gormley and his chip from the edge of the penalty area rebounded off the bar into the experienced hands of veteran keeper Tony Godden. Defences dominated for the remainder of the half but Birmingham nearly scored within a minute of the restart when Andy Williams sent Dean Feer clear but his angled shot flew wide from 15 yards. With a replay looming Coleshill almost scored the winner in the 86th minute when Mulholland was fouled but Frank Hickman blasted the free kick inches over the bar from 20 yards.

SPORTS ARGUS WROTE
Coleshill Town were unlucky not to open the scoring after only seven minutes when Gormley put through Mulholland but his neat chip over the goalkeeper from 18 yards rebounded off the bar and into the arms of Godden. Coleshill inspired by Gormley were controlling the game against their illustrious opponents but Birmingham marshalled by keeper Godden never looked in danger of conceding a first half goal.
Half Time: Coleshill Town 0 Birmingham City 0
Birmingham began the second half well and within a minute they should have scored when Feer having been sent clear by Williams was unlucky to shoot wide from 15 yards. Coleshill nearly grabbed the winner four minutes before the end when Cook fouled Mulholland just outside the area, but Hickman blasted the free kick inches over the bar.

1913/14
Saturday 6th December 1913
Evelyn Cecil Shield 2nd Round
Coleshill Town 8 v 4 Mitchells & Butlers

Coleshill Chronicle Wrote:
So far this season, Coleshill Town has not been lucky in the various competitions, the match on Saturday being the first it has won at home. Further interest was added to the game by the fact that Mitchells and Butlers were the Champions of Division 11 of the League last season. Rain had fallen the greater part of the previous day and continued on Saturday, consequently the ground was very heavy and good football seemed almost out of the question. Bayley failed to put in an appearance and Yates, of the Reserves, was introduced. Clare won the toss for Coleshill and elected to kick uphill. Twenty seven minutes from the start Mitchells broke away and opened the scoring with a good shot. Greaves quickly levelled the points and soon afterwards Coleshill secured the lead. The half time score being Coleshill 2 Mitchells 1. Before the second half had progressed far, Mitchells brought the scores level. Dyke gave the Town the lead directly afterwards, then Mitchells scored twice in quick succession, but this was the end of their success. Coleshill soon equalised and thereafter all the scoring was on the part of the Town. The result being Coleshill 8 Mitchells and Butlers 4.
