THIS WEEK 2013/14 -25, 50 and 100 YEARS AGO WEEK 23

1988/89
Saturday 14th January 1989
Midland Combination Premier
Highgate United 4 v 3 Coleshill Town
Scorers: Rhodes, Paul Brady, John Taylor.

Sunday Mercury Wrote:
Highgate frittered many early opportunities before Rhodes gave the visitors a 28th minute lead. Mulholland scored with a twice taken free-kick. Another break away after 42 minutes saw Williams send Paul Brady clear to restore the Coleshill lead. Highgate threw everything into attack in the second half but had to wait until the 68th minute when left back Buchanan beat five players and let fly with a shot which Lutwyche blocked but could not prevent entering the net. Cockerill hammered a blistering shot just under the angle to give Highgate the lead for the first time. But Coleshill equalised a minute later when Rhodes found Taylor unmarked to score. Taylor handled the ball in the Coleshill goalmouth after Lutwyche fumbled a high cross. Cockerill netted from the penalty spot but was ordered to take it again after a Highgate player encroached into the area. Cockerill’s second penalty was blocked by Lutwyche but the striker collected the rebound and turned the ball into the net.
