THIS WEEK 2013/14 -25, 50 and 100 YEARS AGO WEEK 25
1988/89
Saturday 28th January 1989
Midland Combination Premier
Bolehall Swifts 2 v 0 Coleshill Town
Sunday Mercury Wrote:
Coleshill came out and pressurised Bolehall straight from the kick-off. But again man in form Gwynne made it two (no mention of the first goal) with a volley after his perfect cross to Oughton was parried by Lutwyche. Minutes later Duggins fired wide after being put through by a brilliant Oughton run. By now Bolehall were well in command. On the 30th minute Lutwyche saved well from Mallors. Coleshill tried hard but safe handling by Whitehead and good defending by experienced man Welsh saw Bolehall through a difficult period. Substitute McKee and in form Gwynne kept Coleshill under pressure. McKee’s perfect centre was just right for Gwynne’s hat-trick but his hurried shor went wide. A terrific run by skipper Wyatt brought off a brilliant save by Lutwyche. Within seconds Gwynne volleyed high another good chance.

Saturday 25th January 1964
Birmingham Youth & Old Boys League, Mercian Division
Coleshill Town 1 v 3 Handsworth Amateurs
Scorer: Geoff Beavon.
Coleshill Chronicle Wrote: White Makes Great Debut For Town
Handsworth went straight into attack and were rewarded with a goal from White after only four minutes, John Hobbs making his debut in the Town goal making a “blushing” mistake. Handsworth continued to call the tune and it was the elusive White who scored again in the 25th minute, a clever swerve passed centre half Billy Holmes leaving him the simple task of beating Hobbs. The Town were thought unlucky when Gordon Moseley, the ex Thermalite and Coleshill Hall player was brought down – appeals for a spot-kick being ignored. Just before the interval, however, the home side reduced the arrears, Geoff Beavon slamming home a penalty. Coleshill were greatly improved in the second half, their half back trio of Roy White, Holmes and Dick Checkley pushing passes to their men up front, but many chances were squandered. It was right against the run of play when Hansworth increased their lead, Moseley scoring direct from a corner as the Town fought hard for what would have been a most deserving equaliser. Roy White, in this his first game, was truly great, while Hobbs did much better when he got rid of his apparent “nerves”.

Fixture Saturday 1st February
Hillbrook United v Coleshill Town.
Coleshill Chronicle Also Wrote: Support For Coleshill Charity Cup Is Flagging.
For the Semi Final of the Coleshill Charity Cup between Marston Green and Stockingford AA, a despondent Secretary Mr Sidney Boucher, along with Mr Bernard Knight, one of the keenest workers for local soccer, were busy erecting goal posts and nets! Mr Boucher said that interest in this age-old competition appears to be on the wane. Such was the poor support that the officials fees were only barely accounted for, a most sorry state of affairs. The other Semi Final is between Sutton Town Reserves and Water Orton United.
