WE MEET AGAIN - COVENTRY SPHINX


Sphinx and Coleshill regularly did battle against each other in the 90's and early 2000' in the Midland Combination, then again in the Alliance as they both moved up the pyramid. Coleshill moved up another step in 2018 and Sphinx have now joined them at Level 4 this season.

Coventry Sphinx joined Coleshill in the Midland Combination Premier Division from the Coventry Alliance for the 1995/96 season and the two teams met each other pretty much every season up to 2017/18. The exceptions being 2000/01 when Coleshill had a season in Mid Com Division 1, and 2007/08 when Sphinx stepped up to the Alliance a year ahead of Coleshill.

Sphinx are a club I’ve always admired, they seem to get the off the field things right. They have a lovely club house, the pitch is always in great nick, they have loads of helpers on match day, and they have a great programme and web site. They do have the advantage of being the senior Non-League side in Coventry so they have the pick of the talent from a very large catchment area and because of that they have generally done really well.

Coleshill’s record against Sphinx over the years isn’t too good as the All Time Record shows. Sphinx have done the season double over Town seven times whereas Town have only ever done the double over Sphinx twice, in 2009/10 and 2015/16, and it won't happen this season following the 0-0 draw at Sphinx earlier in the season.

Coleshill's best result over Sphinx was in the last game of the 2014/15 season when Shane Benjamin was chasing the League "Golden Boot". He scored Seven times in a 8-1 win, taking his season total to 47, and yes he did win the Boot!

This season both sides are finding it tough. Sphinx currently lie in 17th place with 20 points from 23 games. Coleshill are just three places above with 28 points from 25 games, definitely a SIX pointer, and would be good if the new manager gets a win on his first game.
