Coleshill Town gained their first home point of the season after a keenly contested encounter at the Pack Meadow ground. Coleshill took the lead in the eighth minute when a cross from Cash was knocked back by Cooke for veteran striker Cotton to score from close range. Tragedy struck the home side 20 minutes later when a cross from Foggarty was turned into his own net by the unfortunate Bennett. Coleshill came back in the 47th minute and Brady took a high ball in his stride but keeper Davison made a brave save at his feet. Brady then skimmed the Police bar following a cross from Cook and in the closing stages Small beat Seaton but Houghton in the Coleshill goal made a good recovery to thwart the Police attack.

Town Side Make A Poor Start
Coleshill Town made a poor start to the new season when they slipped to a 2-1 defeat against Ward End Unity. First impressions were that this Coleshill Town outfit is not as good this term as last. And if they want to do as well as last season some swopping and changing may be needed fairly quickly – or there will be no cups marked “Coleshill Town”. In this opening match of the Birmingham Youth and Old Boys League both teams were severely hampered by a strong wind blowing across the pitch. But this was still no excuse for the Town’s poor performance, particularly the ineffective finishing. Ward End just deserved both points but they also squandered far too many chances before snatching the winning goal ten minutes from time. Coleshill’s stars were Arthur Mullard, who turned in a solid display at centre half, right back Steve Ward and left half Tony Pugh. The forward line was sadly out of touch and was the main weakness. The visitors relied on much the same team as finished in fourth place last term and generally they looked far better balanced with skipper and left back Ivor Davies taking full marks. The Town started strongly and with the aid of the strong wind made frequent raids without profit. It was 15 minutes before Ward End managed to get the ball to the other end. A shot from right winger Henry Sanders gave Hooper difficulty. Within seconds the Town were a goal in front. A wind powered shot from Roger Dainty gave goalkeeper Holt no chance. This gave Coleshill a tonic. Minutes later it was almost 2-0 when Trevor Satchwell hooked the ball wide of Holt only to see it hit the post and rebound back into play. Ward End attacks were few and far between but they grabbed the equaliser in the 35th minute when Sanders slammed the ball high and wide past Cooper. The second half gradually sank into a poor spectacle with neither side producing a worthwhile shot. Defences were on top and clamped down on any attack almost before they began. But with ten minutes to go Ward End became much more aggressive and with minutes left snatched a winner. Centre Forward Else headed a corner kick well out of Cooper’s reach. Coleshill never looked like coming back into the game and Ward End were content to see the game out at their leisure.

Lord Kitchener’s Tribute “We Are Proud Of Them”
Japan declared War on Germany.
The Austrian army has been defeated by the Servians on the Drina with up to 20,000 killed in the conflict. The Russians claim that several towns have been occupied in East Prussia and that there are 4,000,000 men in the first line and an equal number in the second. British troops were engaged with the enemy in Mons. Lord Kitchener made his first speech as Secretary Of State for War in the House of Lords. “Our troops have been in contact with a superior force of German invaders but have behaved with the utmost gallantry and the British Force is in the best of spirits, We are all proud of them”.

RECRUITING IN NUNEATON
Nuneaton Picturedrome was filled by a large and enthusiastic audience on the occasion of a mass meeting in support of Lord Kitchener’s new army scheme. Nuneaton Borough Band played patriotic selections. The Mayor explained that recruitment was not reaching expectations. In 20 days only 170 men had enlisted. He was afraid that they would have to do something in the way of conscription in England. Lord Denbigh said that it was irritating for Germany to be always running into the Union Jack in all parts of the world, but this was a fight for the very existence of the British Isles. Captain Norton Griffiths, MP, said “Your King and country calls you. Every man must be up and doing”.
