SUNDAY MERCURY WROTE
Stapenhill and Coleshill cancelled each other out to draw a blank in the gale force conditions. It was an entertaining encounter between two well positioned teams and although the game lacked goals it certainly did not lack sparkle.

FROM THE COLESHILL CHRONICLE ARCHIVES
The local newspaper is starting to be dominated by the war but life still goes on in and around Coleshill. Steps are being taken to accommodate some of the Belgian refugees in Coleshill at the Bank House on Church Hill, (top of Church Hill on the left) thanks to the kindness of Mr Hyde. Some parishioners in this district are responding nobly to the appeal for the war relief fund, and hope to raise £400. New lamps (gas) have been fitted in Parkfield Road but are being lighted considerably later than usual (cuts again!). A County Council steam roller was involved in an accident whilst proceeding down the High Street hill. There is no mention of Coleshill Town Football Club but Coventry City sent almost a first team to Cannock on Monday to contest their tie in the second round of the Birmingham Senior Cup and won 3-0. Coventry City Reserves played Aston Villa Reserves drawing 4-4.

Land and Sea Forces Combine
British War Ships Bombarding Germans
For three days eleven British warships have been bombarding the Germans on the Belgian coast. The Germans are stated to be retreating and retrenching near Middlekerke. It is rumoured at Ostend that the Allies have blown up the railway to Ghent. In the east the forward movement of the Russian Army continues. An important success in the region of Warsaw has thrown back the enemy more than sixteen kilometres. According to Spanish sources, the Kaiser is seriously ill.
