Scoreline Midland Combination Premier
Solihull Borough 1 v 2 Coleshill Town
Scorers: Edward Payne, Rory Cash.
SUNDAY MERCURY WROTE
Solihull were never really in this game and Coleshill deserved their victory if only on their first half performance. Coleshill scored after 37 minutes when Cash was put through, his shot was only parried by Carmell into the path of Eddy Payne who scored. In the second half Solihull surprisingly equalised with a spectacular volley from John Brookes after eight minutes but Borough still failed to put Coleshill under pressure. There were few chances until injury time when Rory Cash’s corner lead to the winning goal. The ball somehow finding its way to the net.

COLESHILL CHRONICLE WROTE
Town Maintains It’s Improvement
Middleton Scores Two in “Nap-hand”
Next week Coleshill Town visit Nuneaton with hopes of extending their Coleshill Charity Cup interests at the expense of Abbey Y.M.C.A. and if this solid 5-0 victory over Solihull College can be enlarged, then the Town should be able to scramble over the brim of the hat holding the tickets for round three. Secretary Bernard Knight had a full-strength team for the visit of Solihull College and saw his part of the bargain turned to good account – The Town’s “nap-hand” victory signalling the “Green and Whites” as a team once more to be feared. He believes that the Town’s “revival” is perfected by all round team spirit instilled by their skipper Tony Pugh. Kicking off with the wind behind them, the Town were guilty of squandering several scoring opportunities and 18 minutes had passed before Ray Middleton collected his shooting boots to put them in front with an unstoppable shot. With the College defence looking most uncomfortable both against the blustery conditions and the close attention of the Town attack, it was not surprising to see their goalkeeper beaten again in the 23rd minute – local man of the law P.C. Billy Fair being the man on the mark. Jitters remained with the visitors to such an extent that a rasping cross field shot from Fair hit the boot of Solihull’s right back Bennett and the ball flew into the net. This was Coleshill coming back to their best form and just before the interval they pushed the score along to 4-0, Dave Whitehouse making no mistake from just inside the box. With the conditions favouring Solihull the Coleshill attack was forced to play second fiddle during the early part of the second half and it was a breakaway that entitled them to complete their five goal victory. A quick through ball was pounced upon by Middleton and his shot sped past the advancing goalkeeper, Rowledge, into the vacant net. Although failing to get his name on the score sheet, left winger Ian Ewan displayed both craft and speed and this match proved that he is improving by leaps and bounds on each outing. It now only remains for Coleshill to show that their poor performances in the early part of the season are past history – next weeks result will no doubt tell the tale.
