SUNDAY MERCURY WROTE
Highgate Quick Off The Mark

Highgate scored the fastest goal of the season in the League when Paul Rossi scored after only six seconds to give his side their first league win of 1990. Highgate took the lead straight from the kick off when Rossi saw his 20 yard strike fly past Darrell Houghton. Coleshill nearly equalised after eight minutes when Steve Williams headed a Brad Lee cross narrowly wide from 10 yards. Coleshill dominated the second half and almost equalised after 63 minutes when Paul Jones picked up a loose ball on the edge of the area before firing narrowly wide. In injury time Coleshill debutant Chris Lawley was sent off after kicking the ball at the referee.

COLESHILL CHRONICLE WROTE
COLESHILL TOWN FOR VILLA PARK?
Outclass Ward End In Cup Replay

Remember that great 14 goal battle a few weeks ago when Coleshill Town and Ward End Unity each scored seven goals? These two rivals met again on Saturday and in the important second round Aston Villa Shield game the Town moved on with a 4-2 win. A team struggling throughout this season, the Town are gradually settling down into a side that could well retrace the steps of their outfit of two seasons back when they trotted out on the lush Villa Park to take the self same trophy. Ward End first tasted the bitter pill after 12 minutes when Jim Henry moved in from the right wing to rocket a low shot into the rigging. Five minutes past and Coleshill made the score 2-0 when the wind carried Tony Pugh’s shot over the goal keepers head and into the net. A perfect goal from leader Roy Middleton following a Ewan corner made it three on the half hour but just before the interval Ward End rapped the Town’s defence when outside left Smith put the ball past goalkeeper Gary Cooper who was limping badly on the goal-line. After Jimmy Henry had a goal disallowed, Ward End hit back to reduce the Coleshill lead through a defensive blunder. John Dore allowed left winger Smith to take the ball off him and a short pass to the Ward End centre forward saw him make no mistake. But any hopes Ward End may have had were quickly dashed by the elusive Jimmy Henry who steered a perfect left foot shot into the net.
