COLESHILL CHRONICLE WROTE
Villa Park - Here We Come
Lincoln, present leaders of the Mercian league and hot favourites to complete the "double" with the help of the Aston Villa Shield, were given the shock of their lives on Saturday when, after leading 2-0 against Coleshill Town, were finally beaten 3-2. This was Coleshill finest hour and a half of the 1964/65 season and their grand success puts them through to the Semi-Final and to await the draw hat also involves Sherwood Rangers, Handsworth Amatuers and Aston Celtic. Lincoln lost no time in booking the Town's defence for a hot spell - their forwards surging on the visitors goal like bees around a jam pot and it came as no surprise when they opened the scoring after 14 minutes. Gary Cooper in the Town goal seemed to be suffering from nerves but he had no earthly chance to prevent Geoff Pugh scoring with a close range shot. The goal pushed Lincoln more and more on top and the Town's defence was kept at full stretch with skipper Tony Pugh and his gallant men fighting tooth and nail to keep their goal out of danger. After 18 minutes Lincoln, who were moving the ball with speed and good judgement, increased their lead with right half Maurice Turton hitting the back of the Coleshill net with a terrific 25 yard shot. Coleshill looked booked for defeat and the picture they had in mind - "Villa Park" - became misted until the 38th minute when they were awarded a penalty. Dave Whitehouse was brought down inside the box and the referee pointed to the spot - Tony Pugh racked the ball into the net only to hear the whistle sound. He was forced to retake the shot and he was relieved to see the ball safely netted. The Town came out with sleeves rolled up and began the second period with vigorous attacks on the Lincoln goal but found their goal keeper Bodfish equal to the shots fired at him. Lincoln still looked the part and the Town defence was kept on their toes with Cooper looking much more confident by pulling off several masterly saves. In fact it was improved play by the whole Coleshill defence that gave their forwards the heart to press on and they were duly rewarded in the 65th minute with an equalising goal. Brian Mathews brought the ball through a packed Lincoln defence to sling the ball out to Middleton who from an acute angle glanced the ball out of the reach of Bodfish. Lincoln now saw the game slipping from their grasp and found their scoring efforts fall into the safe hands of Cooper. Coleshill on the other hand were intent on keeping their new found hope alive and would have been satisfied with a chance of a replay against their formidable opponents. But in the 75th minute the Town players were surging around their outside right Billy Fare with hand shakes and back slapping after giving them the lead and final victory. Deputising for Jimmy Henry, the Town's local policeman took Middleton's pass in his stride and saw his cross shot enter the Lincoln net off the post. Lincoln, now faced with a shock defeat, spent the last few minutes attacking the Town's goal who with ten men when Cooper was taken off with an injury, were greeted with the referee's whistle for time. Coleshill Town are still very much en-route for Villa Park's final.

Date Of Death: 8/2/1915
Notes: Joseph Fitzgerald was born in 1885 in Birmingham to parents Bartholomew and Pauline Fitzgerald. The family lived in Ladywood, Birmingham. Joseph’s father died in 1894 and the family fell on hard times. Pauline was sent to the workhouse several times and so Joseph was sent to the St Paul’s Home for Boys, Coleshill, and then the St Vincent’s Home, Moseley Road, Birmingham. He left in June 1899 and was sent to live in Ramsgate. At some point after this he returned to Birmingham and enlisted in the Army, and served abroad with the 1st Battalion Royal Warwickshire Regiment (service number 9259). Private Fitzgerald was awarded the Indian General Service Medal 1908 with two bars. In 1911 he was serving in Ceylon & India. At the outbreak of WW1 the 1st Royal Warwickshire Regiment were at Shorncliffe, Kent, forming part of the 10th Brigade, 4th Division. They were quickly mobilised and landed in France on 22nd August 1914, after initially being held back to defend England against a possible German invasion. The Battalion provided reinforcements at the Battle of Le Cateau and saw action at the Battle of the Marne, the Battle of the Aisne and the Battle of Messines. They also took part in the Christmas Truce of 1914. At the beginning of February 1915 the 1st Battalion Royal Warwickshire Regiment were away from the frontline trenches for a few days, and billeted near Steenwerk in northern France, close to the border with Belgium. On the 8th February a group of men left their billets to have a look around and buy some food locally. They were returning to their billets along the railway in the evening when a light engine came and accidentally killed two of the men: Private Allen Yapp and Private Joseph Fitzgerald. Both men were buried the next day in La Creche Communal Cemetery. Private Fitzgerald was posthumously awarded the 1914 Star, British War and Allied Victory medals. He is also remembered on the War Memorial in St Teresa and the Sacred Heart, Coleshill.

THIS WEEK will also be in every home game programme.
