SUNDAY MERCURY WROTE
Coleshill took the lead after just eight minutes when Jones drove home a loose ball from 12 yards. Four minutes later the visitors increased their lead when Blakeney was judged to have handled the ball in the penalty area and Jones made no mistake from the spot. The visitors nearly increased their lead when Cash beat the off-side trap and lobbed the advancing goalkeeper but his effort went just wide. Coleshill continued to have the better of the exchanges and increased their lead in the 35th minute when keeper Butt, after saving a shot from Williams, turned and pulled the ball back over his own goal-line. The home side’s pressure finally told after 75 minutes when Becley crossed from the right, the ball was neatly headed on by Mills to Young who scored from ten yards.

COLESHILL CHRONICLE WROTE
Coley Foils Town In WMC Win
Tamworth WMC are set to take the championship title of the Mercian league! On Saturday they collected two golden points with a narrow 2-1 win over Coleshill Town while their near neighbours Bolehall Swifts, halted the WMC’s nearest rivals, Christchurch, with a 2-1 win. Tamworth now lie in second place, three points behind Lincoln but they have three games in hand. The man they had to thank for this position was goalkeeper Mick Coley whose brilliant display denied Coleshill of the point they so richly deserved. Coleshill won most of the honours in the opening stages as they fought to move away from the bottom part of the league table. The visitors goal had a narrow escape when a cross from Billy Fair eluded Coley but Dave Whitehouse failed to make the most of the chance. It was after heavy pressure by the Town that Tamworth hit back and in the 12th minute a squared ball from Tom Seedhouse was hammered home by Peter Weir with keeper Cooper caught in two minds. Coleshill were not dismayed. Good work by Ian Ewan along the left wing kept the WMC defence on their toes and after 25 minutes a sizzling shot from Roy Middleton had Coley beaten all way for the equaliser. Coleshill gradually found their balance and but for Coley they would have taken a winning lead, with one save from leader Murray stamping him as the best goalkeeper in the Mercian League. The WMC strove tooth and nail in an effort to claim both points and a second goal from Pete Weir in the 75th minute sealed Coleshill’s fate.
