COLESHILL CHRONICLE WROTE
EIGHT MAN TOWN JUST SAVE A POINT
Saturday was just one of those days for Coleshill Town, and their genial secretary, Bernard Knight, who apart from looking after the young son of the club’s player/committee man, Ronnie Houghton, saw his side claim a 3-1 lead, fall behind and then fight back to salvage a point. But Bernard’s eventful afternoon began as soon as he arrived at the Solihull ground. He found three of his team – Roy Middleton, John Dore and Dave Whitehouse – were missing and it was learned later that they had been unable to find the College’s ground. This was when Ronnie Houghton was pressed into service at right back but not before Mr Knight had been given the custody of Houghton junior. The Town’s depleted forces showed up well in the opening minutes and within the space of five, found themselves a goal up. Awarded a free kick, their centre forward Paddy Murray lobbed the ball into the Solihull goal-mouth where Billy Fair decided to leave well alone and the ball travelled through into the net. The home defence was kept at full stretch for long periods and after a lengthy spell of attacking Billy Fair sent the Town further in front. Solihull gradually pushed the Coleshill forwards back into the middle and it was during a hot piece of attacking that Ron Houghton tried his hand as goalkeeper and Solihull reduced the arrears from the spot kick just before half time. The second half was only a few minutes old when a flurry of fists saw a player from each side given marching orders which reduced Coleshill’s rank even more – to eight – and they were without a centre half. But ill luck changed to good luck when centre forward Murray banged home a penalty but this success was short lived and goals from the College came in quick succession via Baleton, Keneally and Deaner. It certainly looked like curtains for Coleshill. With the sands of time running out, the Town made a last do or die effort and with four minutes to go Paddy Murray moved in to complete his hat-trick giving the Town a well deserved point – a just reward as Knight’s services as baby-minder. Town’s star, believe it or not, Pop Houghton. Junior was not so good but his Dad – as good as ever.
