Coleshill Town 1-0 Solihull Moors

Coleshill Town pulled off a shock pre-season win on Saturday at Pack Meadow, defeating Blue Square North side Solihull Moors by a goal to nil. Despite the hosts lying four leagues below their opponents, rarely was a gulf in class noticeable and Luke Edwards’ late looping header ultimately earned a deserved win for the Colemen.
Coleshill new-boy Danny Carter must have given Edwards particularly large thanks for his winning goal, as he was guilty of missing possibly the best chance of the entire game in the closing stages of the first half, a heavy touch enabling goalkeeper Adam Rachel to collect the ball as Carter wasted the potentially lucrative one on one opportunity. This was a rare moment of weakness from the magnificent midfielder, who played excellently in a first half also highlighted by a Matty Robinson free kick crashing against the bar from 20 yards.
The second half saw wholesale changes as a new pack of players sought to impress manager Carl Adams, including goalkeeper Chris Butler, who was kept busy by the visitors but worked hard to earn his clean sheet. Chris Gumery wore the captain’s armband in the second half with his introduction, and almost put his side ahead on the hour mark, forcing Adam Rachel into a low save after guiding the ball towards goal from Danny Baker’s flick-on.
The goal eventually came from a set piece with 78 minutes on the clock. Barry Fitzharris drove in a cross from the right hand side, the delivery being met by centre back Luke Edwards whose headed attempt looped over substitute goalkeeper Daniel Crane and into the far corner to spark jubilations in the Coleshill dugout.
It may have been 2 just as quickly, as Chris Gumery received a pull back from Neil Kitching’s steaming run on the right side of the penalty area, but the eventual shot was cleared off the line. Moors pressed in the final five minutes in search of an equaliser to spare their blushes, but couldn’t do anything more than their series of skied chances from Matt West and Dean Lea earlier in the half.

Coleshill Town next play Sutton Coldfield Town of the Evo-Stick League on Saturday 31st July, with the final friendly game before the kick-off of the 2010/11 season coming against Dosthill Colts at Pack Meadow on Tuesday 3rd August.
