WE MEET AGAIN - Malvern Town

Coleshill travel to Malvern on saturday with the basement club yet to record a victory this season. Their results so far are:
P10 W0 D2 L8 F3 A30 Pts2
their only points coming in a goaless draw at Alvechurch and a 2-2 draw against Bridgnorth.

Malvern won the West Midlands Regional League in 2003/04 and were promoted to the Alliance but a third place finish in 2006 was enough to secure a place in the newly formed Southern League Division 1 Midlands. After a couple of seasons struggling at that level they were relegated back to the Alliance for the 2009/10 season and so Coleshill have met them twice at this level.

But that is not the whole story!

Malvern joined the Worcester Combination in 1955 and when Coleshill got promoted to the Mid Com Division 1 (now Premier) in 1975, the two teams met for four seasons, until Malvern switched to the West Midlands League.

Unfortunately my records during that period are poor and the only detail I can come up with so far is the date of the first meeting between the clubs in the Midland Combination Division 1.

Saturday 31st January 1976
Coleshill Town v Malvern Town

Malvern were, at that time, well established at that level but Coleshill struggled to make an impact in the Com Div 1, and so in the four seasons they played together Malvern always finished above Coleshill.

1975/76 Malvern Runners Up Coleshill 17th from 18.
1976/77 Malvern 5th Coleshill 12th from 18.
1977/78 Malvern 8th Coleshill 17th from 20.
1978/79 Malvern 13th Coleshill bottom from 20. Luckily Coleshill avoided relegation due to league restructuring, and Malvern moving to the West Midlands League probably helped.

All Time Record
P10 W2 D0 L0 F10 A3
8 games with no record of results.

So, at this time it looks as though Coleshill have the upper hand but it hasn't always been like that and few teams go through the whole season without a win! Colemen beware!
