WE MEET AGAIN - Alvechurch

Alvechurch were founded in 1929 and have been at their current home of Lye Meadow since 1957. In the mid-sixties Alvechurch captured the imagination and enthusiasm of the midlands with the team's giant- killing runs in the F.A. Amateur Cup. In the 1964-65 season 'Church reached the quarter finals and then got to the semi- finals the following year. Alvechurch joined the Midland Combination in 1961-62 and claimed the league title the following year. In the next eight seasons they won the championship four times and the league challenge cup five times, and were also runners-up in both competitions on two other occasions. In 1971-72, in their second year in the F.A. Cup, 'Church reached the first round proper after an 11 hour marathon in the Fourth Qualifying Round against Oxford City. This tie is now recorded in the 'Guinness Book of Records'. However, Alvechurch went down 4-2 to Aldershot after a brave struggle in a match that was the 12th in three weeks for some of the team.

Although in the Midland Combination for thirteen years they were still to do battle with Coleshill as by the time Coleshill joined the Mid Com top division in 1975/76, Alvechurch had moved on to the West Midlands League. Church were then promoted to the Southern League Midland Division in 1978, won it in 1980 to gain promotion again to the Southern League Premier in 1982. During that time their most famous son, Alan Smith, gained international recognition when representing the England non-league team and subsequently joined Leicester City, then Arsenal for £800,00 (where he gained full international honours playing for England).

Unfortunatley the club closed in 1993 only to be resurrected for the start of the 1994/95 season back in the Midland Combination Premier Division and so Alvechurch and Coleshill met in a league game for the first time. They had met once before in a Birmingham Senior Cup game in 1991 which Church won convincingly 7-2. They played together at this level for eight seasons (apart from 2000/01 when Coleshill played in Division 1)before Alvechurch gained promotion to the Midland Alliance in 2003 after completing a Mid Com League and Cup Double. Coleshill of course joined the Midland Alliance in 2008 after winning the Mid Com Prem.

The strangest set of results must be 1999/2000 the year Coleshill got relegated after finishing second bottom of the league. The first game at Pack Meadow, played in September saw Coleshill record one of their biggest ever wins, 7-1, our very own Matty Robinson picking up yet another hat-trick, but, by the time the sides met again in February at Lye Meadow, Town were a sorry crew destined for Division 1 and lost heavily 7-2.
