THE ONE THAT GOT AWAY

THE ONE THAT GOT AWAY

This week Alex Rodman signed for League Division 2 side Aldershot Town, after a successful spell with Conference side Tamworth.

So what I hear you say but Alex was the one that got away because he played for Coleshill Town Youth team.

Coleshill re-started their Youth team policy in 2003/04 after a couple of years absence and brought in Mark Butterworth as manager as he had been hugely successful at boys football with 3C's. In their first season Coleshill Town Youths won the Eastern Division title with a certain Danny Carter (now Stratford) breaking all goal scoring records.

With Coleshill being promoted to the Premier Division of the Midland Floodlit Youth League, the highest standard for youths below academy clubs, Mark was joined by Ray Clamp who was also vastly experienced and successful at boys team level with Arden Forest.

Ray brought with him many talented boys who strengthened the side and the following year 2005/06 won the Birmingham County Youth Cup. Joe Clarke was probably the best player we had at that time and he has gone on to play for Darlington in the Conference.

But a certain Alex Rodman played for Coleshill at that time. Alex had come with Ray from Arden Forest and played for a season for the Youths and occasionally for the reserves. At the end of that season, too old for the Youths and not strong enough for the reserves (or so the manager thought) Alex moved on, got trials at Leamington, quickly impressed and found himself in the 1st team and was then picked up by Tamworth. He has impressed so much in his time at Tamworth that "The Shots" have took a punt and signed him this week to play in the football league.

Well done Alex! Mark, Ray and everyone at Coleshill at the time wish you all the best in the future, and maybe there is one more step up to come. Good Luck!
