TONY ALLDEN TROPHY
The Tony Allden Memorial Cup is the Midland Combinations equivalent of the Charity Shield. Last seasons Premier league champions, Coleshill Town, meet the winners of the Challenge Cup, Loughborough University .
Tony played for Highgate United and on Saturday 25th February 1967 he was tragically cut down in the prime of his life. The game was the quarter final of the FA Amateur Cup against Enfield FC. A crowd of 3,000 were shocked into a stunned silence when after twenty seven minutes the game ended in tragedy as three Highgate players were struck by lightning. Eric Taylor and his brother Roy made a full recovery but Tony Allden died in Solihull Hospital twenty two hours later. The replayed game took place ten days later at Villa Park infront of a crowd of 31,632. The Trophy has been played for in memory of Tony since 1970.
21st October 2003
Coleshill Town 2 v 0 Loughborough University
Scorers: Ben Porter, OG.
Teams;
Coleshill—Chris Butler, Josh McPherson, Lee Hunt, Carl Adams, Anthony Hall (Stuart Hendrie), Andy Sutherland (Stuart Adamson), James Dance, Mark Adey, Ben Porter (Michael Campbell), Matty Robinson, Steve Ruck. Subs not used Craig Johnson, Richard Kavanaugh.
Loughborough Uni—Robert Webb, Martin Coulthard, James Ball, Darragh McGee, John Quigley, James Aldred, Adam Jones, Athony Moulds, Chris Neville, Sam Aspinwall, Jamie Stellon. Subs Sam Shorrocks, Simon Kemp, Jack Cullinane, Martin Murphy, Yusuke Tabei.
Coleshill thought they’d took the lead when a Steve Ruck free kick hit the bar and bounced down on the line, the referee relying on his assistant to make sure the ball had not crossed the line but it was a close call. Town did take the lead on 22 mins when debutant Mark Adey released Ben Porter and he confidently stroked the ball under the advancing keeper and into the net. The Uni’s best chance fell to Darragh McGee after Chris Butler spilled a cross but the keeper made amends with a fine save to the follow up shot. Coleshill increased their lead just before half time when Matty Robinson struck a hopefull shot from distance and full back James Bell sliced the ball over his own keeper into the net. The two sides had two cracking games in the league last year with honours even, a win each, but the second half never matched the pre-match billing. Loughborough tried hard without ever looking dangerous and Coleshill were happy to maintain a clean sheet, rarely testing the visitors keeper.
COLESHILL GAZETTE WROTE
On Tuesday 21st October Coleshill played hosts in the Tony Allden Trophy. This is the equavalent of the Charity Shield where last season's Champions play the winners of the league cup. As current Champions Coleshill entertained Loughborough University who won the Midland Combination Challenge Cup. A one off game to put some more silverware in the trophy cabinet. The night started with a minutes silence for Jamie Munday, the Coleshill soldier who died recently serving his country in Afghanistan. Coleshill ran out deserved 2-0 winners with a Ben Porter goal and the visitors putting through their own net but it could have been more as Coleshill were always in charge. Local lad James Dance, captain for the night, was Coleshill's best player and was over the moon to lift the Tony Allden Cup.
