Saturday 29th November 2008
Midland Football Alliance
Coleshill Town 2 v 0 Causeway United
Scorers: James Dance, Matty Robinson.

Coleshill's new management team of Neil Kitching and Martin socket were introduced to the players before the game. Kitch is new to management but knows the local scene inside out. I hope he isn't going to hang up his boots just yet because we miss his precence up front particularly whilst Michael Campbell is suspended. Martin has been at Coleshill before but how the club has changed since then. Martin took over for the start of the 1995/96 season and by January 1998 had converted Town from 17th position to topping the league. Unfortunatley VS Rugby recognised his achievements and tempted him away. Coleshill fell apart and finished 5th that year, so Martin feels that he has unfinished business. Kitch's enthusiasm and Martin's experience could be the ideal partnership. We all certainly hope so, but only time will tell.

For their first team selection they chose a 3-5-2 formation with Rob Freeman and Matty Robinson up front, two small lads who worked tirelessly but got little joy from the visitors defence for most of the game. The five midfielders never really got into the game. James Dance was wide right but did more defending than what we know he is best at, running at people. Coleshill's joy in the last quarter of the game came when Dance moved inside. The back three were solid, Dave Davies outstanding, but they were only marking one player.

This was Causeway's first ever visit to Pack Meadow and I was quietly impressed with their football. Their problem of late has been scoring goals so they decided that the best thing to do was defend well and hope to sneak one. They played a 4-5-1 formation which meant they were solid at the back, No4 Mark Smith in particular shone, and played the ball through midfield where they had the upper hand in possession for long periods. Up front their lone striker worked hard but never looked likely to score. If they had had a Matty Robinson I think they would have won comfortably.

Not much happened in the first half. Causeway's No 7 Carl Martin got down the right side and made some good crosses but Ant Hall and Dave Davies dealt with them with some strong headers. Davies even managed to get up front on the odd occasion and from a Hall free kick the visitors keeper had to tip his headed effort over the bar.

The game was heading for a very boring 0-0 but early in the second half that all changed as the referee took centre stage but lost control. Causeway's Matt Holis took a long hopefull free kick which went straight down the throat of Town keeper Chris Butler. Unfortunately the ball went through Butler's hands and appeared to cross the line but Lee Hunt never gave it up and slammed the ball clear. The Referee went rushing off to the half way line signalling a goal but then decided to consult his assistant. After what seemed an age, he gave a drop ball. Causeway went ballistic, understandably so! But that was it! Little brawls broke out all over the pitch and football went out of the window. Kitching and Socket decided to shore up the midfield with an extra defender, Andy Sutherland, and keep the point but by switching Dance inside suddenly there was space for him to run into. It was Dance that forced a corner that resulted in Coleshill taking the lead on 69 minutes. Nathan Pulisciano sent his cross to the near post and Dance found the net with a rare headed goal. And just four minutes later Simon Volante sent Matty Robinson in for a run at goal. Coleshill's leading scorer still had lots to do but he strugged off the challenges, rounded the keeper and tapped home his tenth league goal and 18th in all competitions, a remarkable effort. Causeway were a spent force and Robinson had an effort well saved at the foot of the post and Dance shot straight at the keeper as Coleshill attempted to increase the scoring which would not have been a fair reflection of the days play.

The new management team off to a flyer and a visit to bottom team Oldbury next week. This result pulled Coleshill up to 14th in the table and has took away any pressure that may have been present leaving Kitch and Martin time to make their own mark, influence the side and maybe bring players to the club without having to look over their shoulder at a relegation fight.

Team:- Chris Butler, Anthony Hall, Dave Davies, Lee Hunt, James Dance, Simon Volante, Stuart Hendrie (Andy Sutherland), Lee Bloxham, Matty Robinson (Ben Porter), Rob Freeman (Danny Carter), Nathan Pulisciano. Subs not used Josh McPherson, Ben Usher.

SUNDAY MERCURY WROTE
Coleshill Town scored twice in five minutees as they beat Causeway United 2-0. James Dance and Matty Robinson were the men on target.

COLESHILL GAZETTE WROTE
Newly installed joint managers Neil Kitching and Martin Socket got off to a flying start with this win, but it didn't look on the cards for long periods as Causeway played the better football. Captain James Dance came up with a headed goal on 69 minutes and four minutes later Matty Robinson doubled the lead.

COLESHILL HERALD WROTE
New Hotseat Duo Off To A Flier
It was first game, first win for Town's new management duo Neil Kitching and Martin Socket, as Coleshill cruised to a 2-0 victory at home to Causeway. Rob Freeman and Matty Robinson worked tirelessly up front but found it difficult to braek through United's defence for much of the game. Causeway put on an impressive didplay at what was their first visit to Pack Meadow, with some great passages of play, maintaining possession for much of the game. It looked like staying 0-0 going into half time until a United shot caused some controversy. Matt Hollis' long-range free-kick went straight down the throat of Town's keeper Chris Butler, only for the ball to go through his hands and appear to cross the line. But Lee Hunt never gave it up and slammed the ball clear, only for the referee to signal a goal before consulting with his assistant and deciding on a drop ball. Tweaks to Coleshill's formation at half time paid off in the second half when James Dance forced a corner that put the home side on the scoresheet on 69 minutes. Nathan Pulisciano sent his cross to the near post which found Dance who netted with a raer headed goal. Four minutes later, Simon Volante sent Coleshill's leading goalscorer Matty Robinson in for a run at goal, rounding the keeper before tapping home his tenth in the league. Town tried hard to increase their lead with Robinson denied a second gaol at the foot of the post and a Dance shot drilled straight at the keeper. Town's win takes them to 14th in the table. Next up is a visit to basement side Oldbury.
