Saturday 6th December 2008
Midland Football Alliance
Oldbury United 0 v 2 Coleshill Town
Scorers: James Dance, Matty Robinson pen.

Two wins out of two games and no goals conceded. The new management team of Neil Kitching and Martin Socket could not have got off to a better start. To be honest, they have been lucky to come in at a time where there is a series of winnable games. Settling in would have been tougher if they had delayed their start and had to face Sphinx, Coalville and Boldmere as they will in the next few weeks, but you still have to win those games and that they have done. Well done to them. Both wins haven't been brilliant performances, but the team does look enthusiastic and plays with shape and purpose and I'm sure will get better. The front two of Matty Robinson and Rob Freeman work thmselves into the ground. Rob is just like Matty but doesn't get into many goalscoring positions, maybe that will come, but he makes up for that with sheer graft. Two new signings made up the wide positions, Jamie Silver, Rushall Olympic, looks quality but needs games as he ran out of legs, and Lee Darlison Bedworth Ex Services, who fitted in as though he had been here for years and will be a tremendous acquisition. James Dance, Simon Volante and Lee Bloxham all worked hard but the pitch did't allow them to play good football. The biggest improvement is at the back where, marshalled magnificently by Dave Davies, we now look capable of keeping clean sheets and allowing the forwards to nick one or two to win a game rather than expecting them to get three or four. The back three performed so well that Chris Butler had a very quiet game, United having just two chances the whole game. One from centre half Rory McFarlane, a header going just wide in the first half and another header in the second half from Adam Bennett that hit the bar.

Despite not having won a single league game all season, Oldbury are not a bad outfit, and just goes to prove how tough this league is. I'm sure they would be well placed in the Mid Com or WMP with this same team. They were well organised and competed all over the pitch. What let them down was the lack of quality in the final third but players that put the ball in the back of the net are worth their weight in gold and luckily we have Matty Robinson. Coleshill played some impressive football despite the very sticky conditions but could have gone behind to the early McFarlane effort. A Rob Freeman cross was cleared with a diving header but the ball fell to Lee Darlison who could have made a dream debut but his goal bound shot was deflected for a corner. On another day Robinson could have had a first half hat trick as he shot straight at the impressive Oldbury keeper after shaking off the defence, then he unsuccessfully tried to flick the ball over the keeper, then the best chance of all was from a great James Dance run and cross that left Robinson with time and space but his measured shot went wide of the post.

The goal that Coleshill deserved came just two minutes after the restart. Jamie Silver picked the ball up from deep and ran at the defence. What a partnership he and Dance will make if they manage to hit it off. Silver easily made progress to the edge of he box and he cleverly rolled the ball along the 18 yard line for the onrushing Dance. The ball seemed to be slightly behind him but he managed to adjust his stride and side footed the ball into the only place that the full length dive of the tall keeper couldn't reach and into the net. Silver did the same thing in the next move but this time he shot with the keeper confidently picking out of the air from under the bar. Lee Bloxham surged forward with a powerfull run and forced a corner as Coleshill pushed forward impressively. The resulting corner fell to Robinson who worked space before having a fine shot well saved. Oldbury, to their credit, never gave up the chase and started to push Coleshill back, dominating in midfield for long periods, but lacked the killer touch, the Bennett effort the closest they came. Coleshill shored up the right side with Sutherland replacing the tiring Silver but it was backs against the wall at this point with the home team really going for it. Coleshill were ready to accept a 1-0 win but Ben Porter, on for Freeman, played a one two with Robinson in the box and went down under challenge. The Referee awarded, not a soft, but a generous penalty, giving Robinson the chance to pick up his customary goal sending the keeper the wrong way.

A long way to go yet but the signs are good. Studley next then three very tough games before Town reach the half way stage at Boldmere Boxing Day. 23 points on the board now with three league games to half way and a haul of close to the 30 mark would be a job well done.

Team:- Chris Butler, Anthony Hall, Dave Davies, Lee Hunt, Jamie Silver (Andy Sutherland), James Dance, Simon Volante, Lee Bloxham, Matty Robinson, Rob Freeman (Ben Porter), Lee Darlison. Subs not used Danny Carter, Ben Usher, Stuart Hendrie.

SUNDAY MERCURY WROTE
Coleshill Town won 2-0 at Oldbury United. Matty Robinson missed a number of first half chances for the visitors and it wasn't intil the 47th minute that James Dance broke the deadlock. Robinson finally found the net from the penalty spot a minute from time after Ben Porter had been brought down.

COLESHILL GAZETTE WROTE
Goals by James Dance and Matty Robinson were enough for Coleshill to gain a convincing win over bottom club Oldbury.

COLESHILL HERALD WROTE
Perfect Start For Management Duo
Two wins in as many games and no goals conceded - the new management team of NeilKitching and Martin Socket could not have got off to a better start for Coleshill. Coleshill played some immpressive football despite the very sticky conditions but could have gone behind to an early McFarlane effort. On another day, Matty Robinson could have had a first half hat-trick. First he shot straight at the impressive Oldbury keeper after shaking off the defence and then he unsuccessfully tried to flick the ball over the keeper. However, the best chance of all was from a great James Dance run and cross which left Robinson with time and space but his measured shot went wide of the post. The goal which Coleshill deserved came just two minutes after the re-start. Jamie Silver picked the ball up from deep and ran at the defence before cleverly rolling the ball along the 18 yard line for the onrushing Dance. The ball seemed to be slightly behind him but he managed to adjust his stride and side footed home. Silver did the same thing in the next move but this time he shot with the keeper confidently picking out of the air from under the bar. Lee Bloxham then surged forward with a powerful run and forced a corner as Coleshill pushed forward immpressively. The resulting corner fell to Robinson who worked space before having a fine shot well saved. Oldbury, to their credit, never gave up the chase and started to push Coleshill back, dominating in midfield for long periods but lacked the killer touch. Coleshill then secured their victory with a second goal as Ben Porter played a one two with Robinson in the box and went down under challenge. The Referee awarded a generous penalty and Robinson sent the keeper the wrong way to tie up the win.
