Biddulph Victoria 1 v 0 Coleshill Town
SUNDAY MERCURY WROTE
Coleshill Town went down 1-0 at Biddulph Victoria when Danny Smith's 35 yard wind assisted free kick went in off the post.
First the excuses! This was the game when the suspentions caught up. Matty Robinson was serving the last of three, Richard Munday the first of two and Lee Bloxham his one and only for now, another three to come for him later. On top of that, Dave Davies and Tom Starkey are still long term injured and Simon Volante was too ill to play although he did make the bench. On Coleshill's first ever visit to Biddulph the weather deteriated the further north we got resulting in a strong, bitterly cold wind going straight down the considerable slopping and bobbly pitch. Now the summary! Coleshill, without their leading goalscorer can't hit a barn door! As at Causeway, Town should have took the lead on several occasions but just can't find the net at the moment. From that, Biddulph grew in statue and out fought the visitors taking all three points with a wind assisted free kick from approx 35 yards towards the end of the first half.
Biddulph had the advantage of the slope and the wind in the first half and used it well but some wayward shooting let them down. Stephen Bennett, Tristian Hamilton and Daniel Smith all having efforts that never came near to troubling Craig Johnson in the Coleshill goal. Town tried to play football but the ball kept ending up in the air. Ben Porter should have put Coleshill infront with less than five minutes on the clock as he finished a move involving Michael Campbell and Stuart Hendrie with a shot with the outside of his foot just wide of the post. Courtney Shaw had a great chance to make a name for himself on his debut but chose to cut inside to his weaker foot rather than shoot from a good position and the chance was gone. Hendrie had a shot saved, Campbell a goalbound effort blocked and Porter shot passed the post again as it looked only a matter of time before Town scored. Campbell made a strong run into the box but shot over then James Dance made an even better break but again the shot ended over the bar. The home teams best bet came from free kicks. Johnson punched clear, Geoff McCan shot wide before at the third attempt Victoria took the lead. On 37 mins Daniel Smith hit a free kick from fully 35 yards that evaded Johnson, hit the post and went in.
As you would expect given the conditions the second half was dominated by Coleshill but the home team had several chances on the break and were only thwarted by a superb display by Johnson. Campbell cleverly thighed the ball into his path and shot but his effort was blocked as Biddulph, with something to hold on to, threw themselves at everything. Keenan Richards shot over from a great position, Porters turn and shot went the same way with the home keeper rarely tested. Neil Kitching came on to try and liven it up and so nearly scored with his first touch but again the goalbound effort was blocked. Biddulph substitute Ashley Lawton impressed when he came on and was only denied extending the lead by another Johnson save. Shaw shot over but in the next attack crossed for the unmarked Kitching to head back across goal but the keeper did well to palm the effort away and Porter hit the post with a follow up effort. Porter sent an overhead kick over the bar before Chris Smith had a great chance to finish it for the home side but he was denied again with another great save by Johnson. Kitching challenged the keeper for a loose ball and the stopper decided to kick clear, the ball ran straight to Porter but his effort was saved by the keepers feet. It just wasn't going to go in. The game petered out and Biddulph were well pleased with the points after four successive defeats.
Coleshill will have some of their players back for the return game this Tuesday, but they will have to perform better than this if they are going to halt the slide down the table.
Team:- Craig Johnson, Tom Brady, Gordon Simms, Ross Adams, Lee Hunt, Stuart Hendrie (Neil Kitching), James Dance, Keenen Richards, Courtney Shaw, Ben Porter, Michael Campbell (Rob Evans). Sub not used Simon Volante.
