Coleshill Town 4 v 0 Friar Lane & Epworth
Scorers: James Dance 2, Matty Robinson, Ben Porter.
SUNDAY MERCURY WROTE
Coleshill Town were also in good form as they swept aside Friar Lane & Epworth 4-0. James Dance scored a goal in each half with Matty Robinson and Ben Porter scoring the others. Mitchell Warner was sent off for Lane.
The Coleshill management had a big decision to make with both Craig Johnson and Lee Bloxham both starting bans after this game and therefore unavailable for the big local derby against Highgate on Tuesday. Johnson's stand in, Chris Butler, was away for the week end so he maintained his place but with two new signings waiting to impress, Bloxham was sacrificed and Jason Lanns came in for his debut with Tom Browett taking a place on the bench. Nineteen year old Rob Evans kept his place in the heart of defence after a solid display on his debut and Richard Munday returned from suspension.
Friar Lane made an impressive start on the first visit to Pack Meadow and played the ball around well. Daniel Geary and ex Maidstone striker Jon Stevenson, the pick of the bunch. Danny Hodgkinson headed a corner wide and Ryan Robbins shot wide but the first save was by the visitors stopper Thomas Holyoak as he gathered a Matty Robinson volley from a James Dance crosss. Robinson sent Ben Porter clear but the out of form striker has little confidence in front of goal at the moment and skuffed his shot into the keepers arms. Stevenson forced a corner off Richard Munday and Nick Gupwell headed the kick wide. It was stale mate but on the half hour James Dance lit up the game with a sintillating run that took him to the edge of the box and his left foot shot swerved away from the keeper and into the net for the lead. Scott Goodman played a through ball and Robbins hit a shot past Johnson but luckily past the post as well. On the stroke of half time a Dance cross was deflected by a defender and hit the bar.
If the first half was even, the second half belonged to Coleshill despite the strong wind, which would have been at their backs, dying off. An air kick by a defender left Robinson clear but by the time he gathered the ball the angle was tight, his effort being cleared off the line. Friar Lane liked to play from the back but Coleshill became wise to this and squeezed the play forcing a mistake. Dance nicked the ball, fed Courtney Shaw but his goal bound effort was well saved, palmed away for a corner by Holyoak. From that corner Coleshill increased their lead. Dance delivered and Robinson, with his back to goal, turned and shot home in one movement for his 23rd league goal of the season. There had been little for the referee to do and no sign of ill feeling between the teams but following an horrendous tackle by Lane's Mitchell Warner on Tom Brady resulting in a mass brawl. When things had calmed down Warner was red carded and Jason Lanns saw yellow. Lewis Gibbons hit a rasping free kick just over the bar and Hodgkinson got to the bye line and looped in an inviting cross that Lee Hunt did well to head away. Coleshill made the game safe on 70mins with a lovely goal. Shaw did what he's good at, drifted in a great cross from the left touch line and Dance came in at the far post to volley into the net. A Shaw corner was headed first by Porter then a diving Tom Starkey only to see the effort go just past the post. Coleshill pressed well with the visitors heads well down. Dance, Starkey and Shaw all had chances to increase the lead but it wasn't until time added on that Porter finally scored his first goal in eight games. Shaw and Dance combined to leave Porter clear and he took his time to find the net, in off the post.
By the end Coleshill looked impressive. Good tempo, good balance and plenty of pace and aggression. As we know Town have been inconsistant this year and there is no guarantee that the same team will come out and play on Tuesday at Highgate. Being local rivals, a result is vital and would give everyone at the club a massive lift for the last six games of Coleshill's first season in the Alliance.
Team: Craig Johnson, Tom Brady, Richard Munday, Rob Evans, Lee Hunt, Tom Starkey (Tom Browett), James Dance, Jason Lanns (Simon Volante), Matty Robinson (Damien Charie), Ben Porter, Courtney Shaw. Subs not used Gordon Simms, Stuart Hendrie.
