Market Drayton 4 v 0 Coleshill Town

SUNDAY MERCURY WROTE
Leaders Market Drayton Town were emphatic 4-0 victors over Coleshill Town.

Four wins on the trot set Coleshill up nicely for this big test against run away league leaders Market Drayton Town. They competed well in the first half and had some plaudits for their neat and tidy football but in truth Drayton were superior in every department, especially at delivery from dead balls, which was at the heart of all four goals.

Neil Kitching and Martin Sockett kept the same shape that had served them so well in the last four wins, a sort of 3-5-2 system with Tom Brady not sure wether to stick or twist down the right side. I don't think the result would have been any different no matter what formation was played but in my opinion, against a side as good as Market Drayton, a solid 4-4-2 and a side packed with workers is the only option.

Coleshill started well and could if not should have taken the lead. Ben Porter, who did look lively, set up Jason Lanns and his shot from 20 yards only just went passed the post. Martyn Davies hit the post after challenging keeper Chris Butler but the ref had already blown for a free kick. Tom Starkey wormed his way into the box only to be denied at the last and Ben Porter had a shot defected for what should have been a corner but a goal kick was awarded. Drayton were clearly rattled but they took the game away from Coleshill so easily and in less than four minutes. Davies got his head to a long free kick by the keeper to flick on for Tom Rogers who turned and shot in one movement, the ball looping over a stranded Butler in the Coleshill goal. I'm sure they showed the goal on Match of the Day that night, or was it Torres for Liverpool! Looked the same!
Coleshill hit back as Porter's cross was chested down by Matty Robinson but his left foot shot went over the bar. On 13 minutes Coleshill were unlucky to give away a free kick for a harmless looking challenge. The home team took full advantage as Stuart Ellis delivered superbly for Grant Goodhead to head home. Game as good as over! Coleshill had their chances but Drayton were bigger, stronger and more determined than a Town team lacking belief. A Courtney Shaw corner matched Ellis's delivery but it was Duncan Horler that got a vital touch to head clear from under the bar. Porter and Robinson's hard work pressurised the home defence into a back pass which Robinson got to first but headed past the post. The home keeper came out and punched clear two Shaw crosses then Jason Francis headed clear a 20 yard goalbound shot from James Dance and Paul McMullen did the same from Porter from the resulting corner. Robinson had the ball in the net but a clear shove was spotted and the effort was disallowed. Dance hit the post with a free kick as Coleshill did everything to get back into the game but it was the home side that nearly scored again just before the break. Dance headed a corner off the line then Richard Munday did the same as Tom Rogers chipped for goal.

Coleshill needed an early goal to maintain the momentum but Drayton increased the lead with a dissapointingly easy goal on 52 minutes. Another set piece but this time the ball landed at the feet of Rogers who had time and space to chip the ball into the net from inside the 6 yard box. Tempers flared as Coleshill were frustrated to be three down without playing that badly. Ritchard Munday and Chris Charles went into the book. Market Drayton now started to dominate. Ellis shot powerfully over from a great position, then Rogers lobbed Butler but the ball landed ontop of the net. Francis crossed from the bye line but his inviting cross was missed by everybody, then Lee Hunt cleared up an impressive attack but the fourth goal again came ever so easily. On 76 minutes Ellis took a corner and Goodhead couldn't believe his luck as he headed home unchallenged. Coleshill had a good shout for a penalty as Porter went to ground and it would have been just reward for their first 45 minutes of graft even though they were rarely in it in the second 45. Davies had an effort well saved by Butler then knocked the rebound over the bar and substitute Duncan Horler headed over another fine delivery from a corner.

So Market Drayton are the bench mark. They will win the league, possibly with a record number of points, and they will get promoted. On their day Coleshill have competed with all the teams in the Alliance bar Drayton and Barwell. It's been a massive learning curve and there is still some way to go but with a settled squad and a full pre-season next year should see an improvement on the current 10th place.

Team: Chris Butler, Tom Brady (Rob Evans), Richard Munday, Chris Charles, Lee Hunt, Tom Starkey (Simon Volante), James Dance, Jason Lanns (Scott Wells), Matty Robinson, Courtney Shaw. Sub not used Neil Kitching.
