Aspire Midland Football Alliance
Coleshill Town 1 v 0 Oldbury United
Scorer: James Dance.
SUNDAY MERCURY WROTE
The stage was set for Matty Robinson to make a late bid for the leading marksman's prize against rock bottom Oldbury United. Robinson was on 28 goals lying in third place before kick off behind Ryan Rowe and Joszef Jakab. Robinson was also making his 100th appearance for Coleshill but James Dance netted the only goal on 84 minutes as Coleshill claimed a 1-0 win.
It was all a bit of a struggle and felt like an end of season game with nothing to play for, which is exactly what it was. Coleshill were assured of an 11th place finish, not bad for a first season in the Alliance, and above the other two promoted sides Highgate and Bridgnorth. Oldbury finished bottom with only one win all season, so the only thing at stake for Coleshill was not to lose to the side with the worst record in the history of the Alliance. The Golden Boot was still a possibility for Matty Robinson who had 27 league goals to his name. He had already broken his own club record with 35 goals in all competitions but chances were few and far between and Cradley's Ryan Rowe took the honour after his two goals at Stratford took his tally to 30.
Both teams put together patched up teams. Oldbury had three players pull out that morning and Town were without Tom Brady, Tom Starkey, Richard Munday, Rob Evans and Ben Porter was struggling with a hamstring strain. Neil Kitching came in to an unusual left full back position, Scott Wells also played out of position at right back, Damien Charie came in for a rare start and Steve Palmer who had been on the bench a couple of times after stepping up from the reserves made his first start.
With only half an hour gone Coleshill had to reshuffle again as Wells went of with a calf injury, Porter coming on despite not being fully fit and Chris Charles suffered an injury as well and was replaced by Lee Bloxham. Despite winning only one game Oldbury haven't been getting hammered and showed lots of fight without ever looking too dangerous. Coleshill huffed and puffed but, in the first 45 mins, rarely tested the Oldbury keeper, Paul Fellows, who had impressed in the first game between the sides. The swirling wind didn't help but the first half was instantly forgettable.
Coleshill stepped up a gear in the second half but found Fellows in no mood to be beaten. Fellows saved from a Damien Charie header and then did even better from a Charie side foot. A routine save from a Palmer effort followed, then he stood tall to thwart Dance as he ran at the defence. Fellows was finally beaten on 84mins and even then he still got a hand to the ball. A Kitching free kick was won by Charie who headed for goal. The effort was half cleared but fell to Dance inside the six yard box and his shot finally found the net despite Paul Fellows heroic efforts. Fellows saved once more from Bloxham before the game stuttered to an end.
Not the best game to finish a season but it has been a massive learning curve. We have the basis of a good side and with a full pre-season and one or two additions we should have a better campaign next term. Top six has got to be the aim.
Team:- Chris Butler, Scott Wells (Ben Porter), Chris Charles (Lee Bloxham), Lee Hunt, Neil Kitching, James Dance, Jason Lanns, Steve Palmer (Warren Thomas), Matty Robinson, Damien Charie, Courtney Shaw. Subs not used Craig Johnson, Richard Davies.
