Midland football Alliance
Coleshill Town 1 v 1 Alvechurch
Alvechurch: Brown (32)
Coleshill: Williams (45, pen)
Report by Paula Scott
The worst weather of the year so far hit Packington Lane on Saturday - with harsh and severe wind playing a great part in the game.
Due to the conditions it was hard to play a passing game and both sides struggled to gain advantage, Chris Gummery was first to attack the Alvechurch goal, the keeper pulled out a fine save and pushed the ball just wide.
Coleshill were on top and several chances were just hit wide from Marvin Johnson and Liam Givans.
Alvechurch had very little possession and Craig Johnson in the Coleshill goal's first real touch of the ball was to claim the ball from the back of the net after Junior Brown beat the defender.
Coleshill were not to be deflated and worked hard to gain possession, Marvin Johnson was then causing chaos in the Alvechurch penalty box which eventually led to a foul and a penalty being awarded to Coleshill.
Luke Williams made sure the score was level at half time by converting an excellent shot.
The second half was eagerly contested by both sides but throughout the second half Coleshill remained on top form and pressured the Alvechurch defence throughout. Coleshill struggled though to convert the goal they were looking for.
With a few seconds remaining Rob Freeman could have secured all three points for Coleshill but could not control the ball into the back of the net and the shot was sent zooming over the bar.
Alvechurch were definately heaving a sigh of relief as the final whistle was blown.
Carl Adams was delighted with the performance in the bad weather conditions and felt his men had worked hard and deserved all the points and never stopped searching for the goal but it just was not our day to convert.

Match Report from Alvechurch
It’s a third successive away league draw for ‘Church, who were effectively denied by a dubious penalty in first half stoppage time that was awarded against the expectations of everyone present except the referee.
‘Church were well worth a half time lead, but the late spot kick decision after Marvin Johnson went to ground in the box left a bitter taste, and although a whole forty-five minutes remained, the deteriorating conditions contributed to a frustrating period of play as ‘Church failed to make good the error.
The game started in driving rain, which continued for the whole of the half. Despite this, both sides were prepared to get the ball down and attempt to play.
Ian Kimberley was called upon after just 2 minutes to produce a point blank save to deny a close range header from Chris Gummery connecting with a cross from Johnson. At the other end, a 4th minute effort from Martin Crawford flashed just wide after he had brought down a high ball and shot from the edge of the box.
The same player was denied on 19 minutes by a last ditch tackle from Luke Williams as ‘Church increased the pressure on the home goal.
Kimberley was called upon on 28 to save well at the feet of Gummery after a defensive clearance had taken a nasty ricochet to the Coleshill striker, but it was ‘Church who finally found a way through four minutes later. A superb flowing move released Crawford to run on goal down the right flank, and having lifted the ball over the advancing Johnson, Junior Brown pounced at the far post to blast the ball into the roof of the net from close in.
Coleshill had a good chance to level on 39 when Gummery brought the ball down on the edge of the box, made room for the shot, and screwed his unchallenged effort well wide without bothering Kimberley.
But the major incident of the half was reserved for stoppage time, when Johnson went to ground in a crowded box, and after initially turning away, the referee inexplicably awarded a spot kick.
Luke Williams converted.
Coleshill Town 1
The second half failed to live up to the first as the rain continued and conditions deteriorated.
Chances were very much at a premium, but ‘Church almost capitalised on 63 when ‘keeper Johnson made a mess of a Stevenson corner, and the ball was adjudged not to have crossed the line as he juggled it under control. Just after, Craig Gregg shot from distance into the angle of the side netting with Johnson spectating.
With a quarter of an hour remaining, Brown lashed a shot wide after a determined piece of battling play by Neil Barnfield on the edge of the box, but the final word went to the home side, who squandered a golden chance to undeservedly take all three points, when, in stoppage time, Robert Freeman blazed over from two yards after connecting with a ball driven across the six yard box.
The single point preserved a four match unbeaten run for ‘Church, but was not enough to maintain third place in the league – with Tipton and Coventry Sphinx both winning, ‘Church dropped two places to fifth.
Man of Match for Alvechurch: Neil Barnfield
