COLESHILL SERVE UP ANOTHER TUESDAY NIGHT DELIGHT
Report by Jack Arkell

Coleshill Town put 4 goals past fellow League Cup Semi-finalists Coventry Sphinx at Pack Meadow on Tuesday to extend their undefeated run to 5 games, scoring 16 goals in this period as a testament to their fine form going forward.
The first half was an edgy affair, resembling more of a chess match than a football contest in the early stages. The first real attempt on target produced the opening goal for the hosts, Marvin Johnson scoring his ninth goal in as many games, and arguably the best of the season. Jon Powis weighted a perfect cross from the right flank, Marvin Johnson met the ball at head height to connect with a stunning overhead kick, sending the ball soaring through the air and finding the top corner of Sphinx’s net.
This goal from a full twenty yards out got the ball rolling for Coleshill, who should have added a second when Marvin Johnson found Chris Gumery in the box, the centre forward’s effort bouncing agonisingly back off the crossbar. The visitors tried in vain to level the score line before the break, passing the ball with fluidity and accuracy up until Coleshill’s final third where Coleshill defended solidly as a unit, stand-in captain Jason Lanns leading by example.
The second half saw more brilliance from Marvin Johnson as the winger tested Chris Daffern early on. Sphinx’s reserve goalkeeper was equal to Johnson’s effort, but would concede a second goal on the hour mark, Matty Robinson sneaking into the 6 yard box to net from Jon Powis’ free kick delivery from the left hand side.
This second goal confirmed the visitor’s need to go all out on the attack, and the curse of the returning player nearly struck again as Adam Kinder saw his curling shot stopped by Craig Johnson in the Coleshill goal on his return to Pack Meadow following a move away from the club at the beginning of the season. Kyle Rhodes followed by heading over the crossbar from 6 yards to keep the pressure on the Greens, but time was against the visiting side.
The three points were sealed minutes later as left back Luke Williams converted a penalty kick into the top corner for Coleshill, his second goal in a week, and he wasn’t the only player basking in the glory of a profitable week.
Matty Robinson went from one extreme to another, this time unleashing a fierce drive from outside of the penalty area to add his second of the evening, and his fourth in the space of 7 days. Any hopes of a hat trick were distinguished when Daffern saved Robinson’s tame shot late on.
This outstanding victory saw Coleshill leapfrog Studley into 12th place, with Carl Adams optimistic about the remainder of the season, even though several key players such as Stuart Hamilton and Jason Lanns will miss vital upcoming games. Adams described his team as a ‘good outfit with several players ready to step into the first team’, and this is certainly going to be needed with both vital League fixtures and a two-legged League Cup Semi-final on the horizon.

Team: Craig Johnson, Chris Charles, Andy Cameron (Ryan Scott), Jason Lanns, Luke Edwards, Luke Williams, Jon Powis (Rob Evans), Ben Porter, Marvin Johnson, Matty Robinson, Chris Gumery (Neil Davis)
Subs Not Used: Malin, Leyiso Recci.

N.B. Coleshill rarely beat Sphinx! It’s a given! Sphinx are a well run club and have more often than not had the upper hand over Town. In fact over the last 20 league meetings Coleshill have only won twice, drawn twice and lost the other 16. The last registered win was 12th October 2004 when a Craig Davies double inspired Town to a 6-3 victory, the other goals coming from Des Wilkes, Stuart Howard, Kevin Wagstaff and Danny Carter. Town have met Sphinx twice in the cup over that period Sphinx coming out on top last season in the Alliance League Cup but Coleshill did beat Sphinx in the Coventry Evening Telegraph Cup back in 2002/03, the only goal of the game coming from Town’s Matty Devine.

Sphinx lose on their travels again…….
By Kev Monks

Coleshill Town 4 v 0 Coventry Sphinx

Coventry Sphinx put in one of their worst performances of the season to lose 4-0 at Coleshill Town.

On a very cold night at Packington Lane, Danny McSheffrey fielded a team that was changed from the side that had lost 3-0 at Alvechurch on Saturday.

Apart from a seventh minute Kyle Rhodes shot which was fumbled by the home keeper, Sphinx struggled to retain possession and found themselves a goal down after 18 minutes when Marvin Johnson was allowed room to get in an overhead kick which hit a divot and beat the diving Chris Daffern.

It could have been two when Chris Gumery’s shot struck the cross bar on the half hour mark and fourteen minutes into the second half Coleshill did increase their lead thanks to Matt Robinson using his elbow to bundle home a free kick which had deceived Daffern. With no complaints from the Sphinx defence, the goal stood.

Adam Kinder had one shot saved and Sphinx’s best move of the match came in the 68th minute when Chris Wilson King beat his marker and crossed from the right flank for Kyle Rhodes to head over.

In the 70th minute, Coleshill were awarded a penalty which Luke Williams duly scored from and five minutes later, Matty Robinson ensured a miserable evening for Sphinx when he hit a fourth with a shot on the turn from twelve yards.

Coventry Sphinx take on Coalville Town on Saturday where a much improved performance will be needed to get anything against a side right in form. Kick off is at 3pm.

Team: Daffern, Goodbody (Phillips 76), McAteer, Woodward (Kimberlin 85), Haywood, A. Wilson King, C. Wilson King, Rhodes, Kinder, Kabongo, Ruff (Muldoon 76). Not used McSheffrey, Byrce.
