EVANS IN SEVENTH HEAVEN

Coleshill Town bounced back from a crushing League Cup 1st Leg defeat to record their first win in 7 at home to Causeway United. The game is one that will be remembered only for Rob Evans’ thirty yard scorcher in the second half in a contest which the hosts controlled from the first whistle to the last.
The Colemen pushed the tempo in the opening stages, with both Rob Evans and Marvin Johnson exploiting the space on the left channel, but Joel Skeldon’s goal stayed untouched. However, Coleshill’s recent miserable luck continued as Marvin Johnson limped off the field just before the twenty minute mark, with young striker Lewis Moss replacing him.
This forced substitution did little to dampen the bright attacking play of the hosts though, as Rob Freeman went close with a long range drive from a corner kick which Skeldon almost spilled right into the path of Chris Gumery, lurking on the six yard box. It would be the latter who would be involved in the best two chances of the half. Firstly, the big striker charged down the by-line using his superior strength to hold the Causeway defenders off, before pulling the ball back for Lewis Moss, the substitute belting a shot into the arms of Skeldon, who caught the ball on its way back down from the air. Moss would return the favour, chasing down a long ball to the wing before delivering a low cross into the penalty area for Matty Robinson to collect. The veteran forward held the ball up, before laying it back for Gumery to try his luck, the end product soaring marginally over the crossbar.
The second half proved to be much of the same, as Lewis Moss once again saw an effort bravely saved, injuring Skeldon and winning a corner in the process. It wouldn’t take much longer for the deserved deadlock breaking goal though, as Luke Williams’ cross formed a goalmouth scramble which Gumery benefited from after Matty Robinson had had a shot blocked off the line.
With the slender lead in their favour, the Greens maintained their attacking brand of play, and Gumery nearly doubled his tally, but for a blue shirt clearing his headed attempt off the line. Matty Robinson was just as unlucky as his half volley on the edge of the area was tipped wide, the ball moving viciously in the air.
The clincher came in the 66th minute though, as Rob Evans’ delicious strike condemned Causeway to their sixth away defeat of the season. The versatile man of the match ran with the ball, commanding the left wing, before cutting inside onto his right foot. What followed was a strike of superb quality, as Evans arrowed a ball into the far corner from a full thirty yards to cap his brilliant performance with a scorching goal. In an ironic celebration the Coleshill Town contingent pointed towards Evans’ fuchsia boots as the source of inspiration for the goal.
Robinson had the ball in the back of the net minutes later, but the attempt was ruled out for offside. It looked like the visitors were going to make Coleshill pay for that poor positioning, as they were awarded a free kick in the D, but the eventual effort was deflected over the bar. The danger continued though as the rarely seen frontline crafted a great attacking opportunity, but Lewis Moss made a strong saving challenge to keep his team in the driving seat.
There would be one final opportunity for the home side to add gloss to the final score as Matty Robinson rounded Skeldon before losing his balance at the crucial moment.

Team: Craig Johnson, Leyiso Recci, Jason Lanns, Luke Williams, Rob Evans, Jon Powis, Ben Porter (Steffano Aronandi), Rob Freeman (Luke Edwards), Marvin Johnson (Lewis Moss), Chris Gumery, Matty Robinson.

Booked- Williams, Lanns.
