TOWN RECORD SPHINX DOUBLE

Coleshill Town sealed an impressive league double over Coventry Sphinx on Bank Holiday Monday to move within one point of their adversaries. The Colemen’s four goal tally didn’t flatter them at all as they controlled the game throughout at Sphinx Drive.
The first fifteen minutes of the game were of a very poor standard, with neither team able to keep hold of the ball, always battling against the strong wind. Craig Johnson in particular did well to win the battle against the conditions, his gambling paid off on several occasions as the ‘keeper claimed every high ball that Sphinx delivered into the box. Sphinx has the best of the early chances as Joshua Ruff latched onto a long ball, but his lobbed shot was carried wide by the wind.
The visitors came a few inches closer through Luke Williams, whose attempt from just inside the area was dragged wide, but the home side’s resistance was broken on 22 minutes through a well worked set piece. In form striker Chris Gumery’s consistent hard work paid off when he won a corner on the left hand side, which Jon Powis swung into the back post for young full back Steven Hakner to head in off the underside of the crossbar. A further setback came for Sphinx before play restarted as top scorer Kelvin Phillips was forced off through injury, with Tom Haywood replacing the centre forward.
This wouldn’t stop the hosts from equalising instantly though, as Kyle Rhodes buried a low cross on the quarter hour mark to level the score. The parity would last only three minutes though, as Jon Powis was held back in the six yard box, preventing the winger from converting Matty Robinson’s cross. The penalty was awarded, and Luke Williams converted low to Carl O’Neil’s left hand side to secure his own personal double over Sphinx, netting from the spot kick in each game.
Gumery almost grabbed a third goal for the visitors when Rob Freeman headed on from Recci’s free kick on the right, but he could only stab over the bar in his search for a third goal in as many games. As Sphinx struggled to get back into the game after being dissected for the first 45 minutes, calamity struck just before the break, as substitute Tom Haywood headed Jon Powis’ fizzing in-swinging cross into his own net, all but securing the three points for Coleshill even before half time.
The job was not done yet, and Coleshill Town spent the majority of the second half in Sphinx’s territory, attempting to break through for the goal that would ensure victory. There was to be no real chances though, with half chances from Robinson and substitute Barry Fitzharris blazed over the bar, but it was the way in which Coleshill contained Sphinx which really impressed.
The visitors’ great work was rewarded in the last minute of normal time when promising teenage midfielder Barry Fitzharris bagged his first goal for Coleshill, forcing the ball home after Robinson had struck the woodwork from close range. After the game Carl Adams praised his side’s response from their defeat in the first leg of the League Cup semi-final, securing six points out of six since then, reason to be optimistic for the next few vital games as the Greens seek success on two fronts.

Team:Craig Johnson, Leyiso Recci, Jason Lanns, Rob Evans, Steve Hakner (Luke Edwards), Jon Powis (Barry Fitzharris), Ben Porter (Steffano Aronandi), Rob Freeman, Luke Williams, Chris Gumery, Matty Robinson.
