CUP MISERY FOR COLESHILL

Coleshill Town's absence of any luck over the past few weeks continued at Allpay Park on Tuesday evening as they crashed out of the League Cup despite once again playing with a more creative and fluent style when faced with Westfields' route one tactics.
The Colemen almost got off to the best possible start inside the first two minutes, Chris Gumery heading against the underside of the crossbar from Marvin Johnson's cross. The cruel luck of the visitors wouldn't end there, as Westfields opened the scoring completely against the run of play, in scrappy fashion. The linesman was in prime position to see that the ball had been bundled over the line at the second time of asking by Tom Sparey in a congested goalmouth scramble as Westfields increased their aggregate lead to three goals.
With the flair of Marvin Johnson and the central midfield pairing of Rob Freeman and Ben Porter proving to be determination personified, Coleshill responded in the best way possible, raining down shots at Westfields 'keeper Jamie Moore. Johnson blazed a long range effort over the bar before curling a free kick just into the hands of the outstretched Moore. Johnson would then turn provider, setting up chances for Recci and Gumery, but each time the ball would only find the advertising hoardings.
Just after the half hour, Luke Williams spurned the best opportunity of the half, meeting Gumery's cross at the far post, but the eventual shot was blocked on the line after the ball had been cushioned down by the winger. The final chance before the break would fall to the hosts as Daryl Addis used his strength to break through on goal, but just as the striker went to pull the trigger Jason Lanns rescued his side with an inch perfect saving tackle.
Coleshill continued to be the most creative side as the second half began, and would finally pull a goal back on 50 minutes. Luke Williams found Jon Powis on the right side of the penalty area with a looping ball, Powis shooting into the ground for Matty Robinson to capitalise on, stooping low to head into the net before the defence could react.
For a short period it looked as if Coleshill had Westfields on the ropes, with danger man Johnson testing the 'keeper twice more, once with a swinging free kick and again with a rather disappointing effort which was easily saved, but at least the pressure was being applied.
With just under a quarter of an hour on the clock, Coleshill were handed a lifeline as they hunted for two more goals to send the tie to extra time. Johnson's cross was handballed, with a penalty being awarded. Luke Williams stepped up to score his third penalty in as many games, once again to the 'keeper's left, the winning formula for the prolific penalty taker.
With time running out and just one goal needed to take the game to extra time, the visitors attempted to overload the penalty area, but the final ball was never present, Westfields doing a great job of stemming Coleshill's attacks. The final half chance fell to Jon Powis, as a headed attempt fell into the waiting hands of Jamie Moore as the final whistle blew on Coleshill's dreams of a cup final, a day out at the Bescott Stadium that they would have felt they deserved after having the best of their opponents over three hours of football.

WESTFIELDS THROUGH TO FINAL

Westfields reached the final of the MFA League Cup when they won through a nail-biting semi-final second leg tie at allpay.park on Tuesday night to record a 4-3 aggregate score over two legs.
Westfields won 3-1 at Coleshill Town two weeks ago but on Tuesday night they were beaten 2-1 by Coleshill to go through 4-3 to the final at Football League Division One side Walsall’s Banks’s Stadium on 11th May when they will meet either Causeway united or Coventry Sphinx who play on Thursday evening.
Westfields had to defend for long periods as Coleshill attacked and in only the 3rd minute Matt Robinson {Chris Gumery} hit the Westfields’ crossbar with a header before Westfields took a 1-0 lead when Tom Sparey headed Westfields in front in a goalmouth scramble to put Westfields 4-1 ahead on aggregate.
Coleshill Town were playing good attacking soccer but Phil Glover and Tom Sparey were outstanding in defence.
After the interval, Coleshill drew level when Matt Robinson levelled the scores from close range and the visitors began to get on top and only good defending by Terry Green and Jamie Cuthbertson prevented Coleshill Town taking the lead.
However, the visitors were awarded a harsh penalty in the 78th minute when Jamie Addis was adjudged to have handled a Robinson cross and Luke Williams put Coleshill 2-1 in front and set up a nail-biting final 12 minutes with the scores 4-3 to Westfields on aggregate.
Coleshill camped in the Westfields’ half throwing men forward and putting high crosses into the penalty area but Glover and Sparey were outstanding at the heart of the Westfields’ defence as Westfields held out to go through to their second senior final of the season and their first ever MFA final.

Westfields: Moore, Green, Cuthbertson, Glover, Sparey, Moon, Addis (J), Hibbard, Addis (D), Kear, Day.
Subs: Edwards for Addis D, 79 minutes.
Subs not used: Jackson, Evans, Jordan, Pugh.
