MATT FINISH FOR COLESHILL
Coleshill Town fought hard to grind out a narrow 1-0 victory at Pack Meadow on Tuesday evening as Matty Robinson netted his first goal at home for almost two months.
The striker was unlucky to have to wait for his goal, as he rattled the crossbar inside the first few minutes when his lobbed effort had the beating of Matt Harris. Robinson's spell of rotten luck was finally over just before the half hour mark though as he was the beneficiary of a delightfully crafted move by the hosts. The prodigious Steven Hakner carried the ball down the left flank before delivering a cross into the penalty area, where Chris Gumery was on hand to flick across the box for Robinson to produce a true poacher’s finish, forcing the ball into the net from close range.
Studley weren't without their moments in the opening period though, Jamie Bailey blazing an effort well over the bar when he should have worked Craig Johnson, but it was that man Robinson again who was involved in arguably the best chance of the game. Rob Evans floated a cross-field ball from the right wing deep into the box, and Gumery should have made contact as the ball travelled back across goal after Robinson knocked it to the hard working forward. Indeed Gumery stood out from the pack with his endless running both with and without the ball, always providing an outlet in the rare occasion of an attack from either team in a quiet half.
It was Studley who came out of the blocks first after the break, putting the Coleshill back four under pressure, and even seeing an effort come back off of the hosts' upright. The attacking continued, as Bailey flashed a dangerous pass into the six yard box, but Luke Edwards was present to block the ball before any damage was done.
Coleshill's response was to slow down the pace of the game, but Gumery managed to craft another half chance in an attempt to strengthen his side's lead. A lofted ball into the penalty area was spilled by Harris giving Robinson a glimpse of goal, but the threat was averted thanks to a timely defensive clearance. The opposing ‘keeper made up for this mistake when he blocked Jon Powis' deflected effort, but the shot was all too comfortable for him, summing up a game in which goalmouth action was at a premium. Tempers flared in the closing stages as a Studley defender saw the red card following an altercation with Rob Freeman, who received a booking for the incident.
Team: Craig Johnson, Leyiso Recci, Jason Lanns, Luke Edwards, Steve Hakner (Lewis Moss), Rob Evans (Barry Fitzharris), Rob Freeman (Steffano Aronandi), Ben Porter, Jon Powis, Matty Robinson, Chris Gumery.
N. B. BBC Radio WM sent along a sports reporter to Pack Meadow for the first time to give live updates from the game. An interesting introduction mentioned the club's long history going back to 1894. Promotion from the Mid Com two seasons ago was a topic of conversation and the fact that the club is consolidating in their new league although they are still aiming for a top six finish. Matty Robinson was picked out as the danger man, the Chairman was mentioned, not by name but by position, and the "Tuck Shop" was given the thumbs up with Nicky reportedly having a slice put to one side with reporter Chris Blakemore's name on. The final report noted that with this hard earned win, Coleshill move up to eigth in the league and with five games to play before the season end on 1st May.
This was a fabulous piece of publicity for Coleshill and with seven other non league grounds having live up dates this can only be good for the midlands non league scene. Well done BBC WM, keep up the good work!
