END OF SEASON BLUES FOR THE GREENS

Coleshill Town’s season ended with a whimper rather than a bang at Boldmere on Saturday, as a second 2-1 reverse in a row ensured that the Colemen finished with 63 points, the same total as last season, yet three places higher, just gripping eighth place by one point.
Boldmere, admittedly with more to play for than Coleshill on the final day of the campaign, started very brightly, and it took a great save from Craig Johnson to prevent Ricky Baker from opening the scoring early on. The hosts wouldn’t have to wait much longer for their solid opening to pay off though, as Baker turned provider on fourteen minutes, breaking into the box before crossing for Tom Law to steadily take the ball down before striking it past Johnson to put the Mikes ahead.
Coleshill didn’t even get a chance to regain their composure as Matt Hawker headed into the far corner from Baker’s corner, a routine set piece that made the visitors’ task almost insurmountable.
The barrage continued as Coleshill remained camped in their own half, with only a clearance off the line by Jason Lanns and another excellent save by Johnson keeping the Greens in the game. The only real save Boldmere ‘keeper Sean Butler had to make was from a Matty Robinson drive on the turn, but it was a comfortable stop from the rare attempt.
Coleshill manager Carl Adams brought himself on at half time for the quiet Rob Evans, and the former Kettering Town player brought stability to his team who kept the ball a lot better as a result of the change. A brave block by skipper Lanns stopped the hosts from further increasing their lead, but a shift in momentum saw the visitors enjoy a lot more possession in Boldmere’s territory.
Chris Gumery poked a shot fractionally wide as he stretched to reach Recci’s cross from the right, and the front man came even closer just minutes later, his looped shot bouncing just over the crossbar, but the linesman had raised his flag. The aforementioned crossbar was rattled by substitute Barry Fitzharris as Coleshill battled against the clock to pull something back.
The game resembled more April 1st than May 1st when Ben Porter received a blatant push in the back in the penalty area, yet no penalty was awarded in an inexcusable decision by referee P. Hill. Porter wouldn’t let this affect him though, and kept a cool head to sweep home Marvin Johnson’s cross after the winger had shrugged off two defenders. It turned out to be too little too late for Coleshill as the latter fired a free kick over the bar in the last chance of a game which brought the curtain down on a marvellous season for both teams.

Team: Craig Johnson, Leyiso Recci, Jason Lanns, Luke Edwards, Marvin Johnson, Ben Porter, Rob Freeman (Barry Fitzharris), Rob Evans (Carl Adams), Lewis Moss, Matty Robinson, Chris Gumery.
