Brocton 4 v 4 Coleshill Town - FA Cup

Postby Alan Beckett » Sun Aug 15, 2010 5:08 pm

Saturday 14th August 2010
F.A.Cup Extra Prelimenary Round
Brocton 4 v 4 Coleshill Town
Scorers:
Brocton: Gary Fife 30, 63, Jack Hall 76, Ashley Phillips 80.
Coleshill: Ben Porter 37, Danny Carter 45, Liam Givans 50, Matty Robinson 60.

For the first twenty minutes of this game it was a matter of when Coleshill would score and how many as Brocton simply could not match Coleshill’s movement or physicality. There were no clear chances and misses, but never the less, the approach play was swift but considered and there was no hesitation in shooting from any angle or distance. Surely only time would bring a better opportunity for them.
Then, on the half hour, Mick Fox was brought down on the left of the penalty box. Gary Fife stepped up for the free kick and no one moved in a tightly packed box as his effort swept into the net. Just two minutes later he was at the end of a sweeping move started at left back by Matt Skinner. He passed inside to keeper Adam Whitehouse, who picked out Richard Jones on his right. Jones passed on to Ashley Phillips and Phillip’s pass put Fife into the box with only a forward rushing keeper in front of him. He lifted the ball, but Craig Johnson was equal to it and grabbed it at full stretch.
As quickly as that chance for a cushion went, Coleshill struck back, with a fine passing move into Brocton’s box. The danger seemed to have gone as the ball was forced away, but Ben Porter, back to goal, pulled off a fine over head kick to snatch the equalizer. Brocton almost made it to half time level, but when Mick Fox was forced off the ball almost at their opposition’s bye line, the counter was decisive. One high clearance over the defence gave Danny Carter the chance to get in a low cross which swerved inside Adam Whitehouse’s near post as he acrobatically dived and got a hand to the ball, unable to prevent it going in.
As much as Coleshill had dominated early on, Brocton felt hard done by to end the half a goal down, but the early superiority that their visitors showed in the second period soon put them in their place. Liam Givans, despite close attention from Matt Skinner, managed to chip Whitehouse for Coleshill’s third after only 7 minutes of the half and five minutes later Matt Robinson seemingly made the game safe for them as he put away yet another right side cross.
But Brocton never threw in the towel and when Fife jinked through three tackles to slide in a second for the home side their spirits were lifted. A clearance from Whitehouse produced the next chance as Jack Hall slipped past the visitor’s back line and once through there was no doubt that he would score.
With under 15 minutes to go, it was Hall again who fought for the ball and won a throw deep in opposition territory and Ashley Phillips hooked the ball in to bring the Badgers level.
Coleshill did everything but have the last laugh as a fine low cross from Carter on the right round Matt Skinner produced a point blank shot and wonderful save from Whitehouse, who not only kept the ball out, but held on to force a replay at Coleshill on Tuesday.
