TOWN’S VASE HOPES SHATTERED

Coleshill Town’s nightmare week continued as they were knocked out of the FA Vase at the first hurdle. Goals from JJ Cole, Andre Joseph and Nathan Singh were enough to eclipse Neil Kitching’s late header as the Midlands Combination Premier team advanced at Coleshill’s expense.
The visitors started the brighter, but wasted a couple of great chances early on. When Chris Gumery crossed into the box for Barry Fitzharris, the youngster chose the intelligent option to lay the ball back across Paul Hewitt in goal for Matty Robinson to shoot, but the attempt took a heavy deflection and span over the bar. Fitzharris would continue the stream of delivery with a brilliantly weighted cross that was stolen off Gumery’s head. Danny Carter saw a further shot go wide of the near post, with Leyiso Recci’s long range drive always rising over the crossbar.
Despite Coleshill pressing more than their hosts, the game would change due to an incident late in the first half. Michael Glynn sprung an attack forward before laying the ball off to Chris Lloyd, leaving both Levi Bailey and ‘keeper Chris Jay stranded. Lloyd’s shot seemed destined to find the net until Jason Lanns helped the ball onto the bar with his hand, seeing a red card for his infringement of the rules as Pilkington received a penalty. JJ Cole made no mistake from the penalty spot as he sent Chris Jay the wrong way to take the lead on 39 minutes. It was very much a case of de ja vu from the Tipton game as Coleshill had once again conceded from a penalty. The similarities wouldn’t end there though, as the Colemen went 2-0 behind, Glynn’s curling free kick delivery whipped into the box for Andre Joseph to head home at the far post to double the lead on the stroke of half time.
It was always going to be an uphill task in the second half for Coleshill, but it could have been a lot more manageable had Chris Gumery been able to capitalise on some ropey defending by Pilkington, but only the side netting could be found. It was all too obvious that Coleshill had a man short, as they allowed Pilkington to play around them. The game was settled once and for all when Glynn’s cross released Nathan Singh to tap into the far corner for his fourth goal of the season to set up the unassailable three goal cushion.
Neil Kitching came on for Coleshill late in the game, and made an instant impression when his venture forward resulted in a shot which took a lick of paint off of the foot of the post. The sub would soon go one better, as he headed into the middle of the net from Luke Edwards’ looped cross from the right after some suspect goalkeeping, but it would serve to be just a consolation goal as Matty Robinson and Liam Givans both found the bushes behind the goal.
It was a disappointing result, but it has to be questioned whether or not there will be much lamentation, as too many cup competitions on top of league commitments will surely put great strain on the relatively thin squad that Adams has at his disposal.

Team: Chris Jay, Levi Bailey, Jason Lanns, Leyiso Recci, Barry Fitzharris (Neil Kitching), Ben Porter, Rob Freeman, Liam Givans, Danny Carter (Luke Edwards), Matty Robinson, Chris Gumery (Richard Gregory).
