ELEMENTARY FOR COLESHILL
Three points were sealed thanks to goals from two of the new breed of stars for Coleshill, as Liam Givans and Richard Gregory sent Loughborough home empty handed.
In truth, the visitors would have been happy to leave Coleshill with a respectable goal difference in tact, as a barrage on their goal in the first half saw them penned into their own final third. Chris Gumery was first to have an attempt on goal, heading wide of the far post from a pinpoint cross from Rob Freeman in a promising early move. Steven Hakner continued the spell of pressure, having a corner delivery cleared off the line, before Freeman rifled a low shot wide from Jon Powis' pull back. It wouldn't take long for the first goal to come, eight minutes in fact, as Liam Givans collected the ball 25 yards out, before striking a crisp effort into the top corner, leaving the Loughborough 'keeper flailing. The goal from distance was hugely deserved, as it had been all Coleshill from the very first minute.
Loughborough started to venture forward after the goal though, and had a series of set pieces, which Town did well to defend, keeping the game under control. One defender particularly impressing was Leyiso Recci, and the right back almost set up his side's second goal as his curling cross was headed into the 'keeper's hands by Gumery. The visiting stopper wouldn't be so decisive soon after, as he fumbled a long ball, patting it down to the edge of his area, with Givans' opportunistic strike palmed over well from a recovering 'keeper. Further attempts from Luke Edwards and Liam Givans failed to give Coleshill that elusive second goal before the break.
The second half saw an unsure start by Coleshill, a far cry from the first period, and Loughborough sought to capitalise, having a headed attempt from a corner fly over the bar before Sam Shorrocks' fizzing long range effort saw the same fate. Gumery tried to stem the flow for Coleshill, and had an effort picked out of the top corner by the goalkeeper, but Loughborough continued to attack, with Danny Webb having the best chance for his side. A cross from the right found Webb in the penalty area with plenty of room, as he got a fine header away, but Chris Jay somehow managed to claw the ball from behind his dive to keep his side ahead. It was heroic goalkeeping, and Will McCall also had a shot saved by the former Stratford man, before Hakner denied the rebound with a courageous last ditch tackle.
In a half where Town had created little in front of goal, yet not exactly been under the cosh, it was of great relief that Richard Gregory came off the bench to seal the game with a cool finish low into the middle of the net from Givans' headed flick on. The celebrations for the second goal summed up the importance of the three points, as Coleshill were back to winning ways with yet another cup tie on the horizon, as Evesham in the next location for an FA Cup First Qualifying Round match.
Team: Chris Jay, Leyiso Recci, Luke Edwards, Jason Lanns, Steve Hakner, Jon Powis, Ben Porter (Warren Miller), Rob Freeman, Liam Givans, Danny Carter (Andy Cameron), Chris Gumery (Richard Gregory).
