COLESHILL CRUISE TO CUP CONQUEST
The Birmingham Senior Cup provided the best tonic for Saturday's FA Cup elimination as Coleshill ran out 3-1 winners over Zamaretto league visitors Haleowen Town. The depleted hosts put in a highly professional performance regardless of numbers, with three goals even without current hot-shot Danny Carter in the squad.
The first half started inauspiciously, with Coleshill looking jaded after their Nuneaton trip on Saturday. Neither team was willing to open up at the risk of going behind, which is what Coleshill would have done but for a comfortable save by Craig Johnson to tip a long range effort behind his left hand post. Few chances were created by Halesowen though, as solid performances from each member of the backline kept their visitors at bay. Luke Edwards was particularly impressive, keeping the muscular Alex Roofe at arms length.
The first time the game really opened up came when Chris Gumery cut inside from the left flank, pulling the ball back for Matty Robinson, but instantaneous closing down by several defenders ensured the ball was blocked before it could trouble Mark Fullwood. The 'keeper would be tested just a few minutes later though, as the same two players combined. Chris Gumery sprung the offside trap to carry the ball up the right flank, selflessy squaring the ball to Matty Robinson on the edge of the area, the striker's deft finish travelling underneath Fullwood's body and across the line just before the break.
Refusing to let the setback have too much of an effect on their game, Halesowen came out of the blocks quickly in the second period, and were level when Roofe finished low past Craig Johnson as Coleshill had ten men on the field with Robinson injured. The team in blue struggled to build upon this initiative, instead drip feeding chances to Coleshill. Dean Baker volleyed a half chance wide, before Robinson made poor connection with a header from Dan Dineen's free kick delivery. Gumery almost grabbed a goal for himself when he got on the end of Jon Powis' cross, but could only clip the post with a towering header. By far the best chance of the game fell to Steven Hakner though, the ball laid out on a plate from great work on the flank by Loyiso Recci, but Hakner sent the ball wide from 15 yards.
Any worries that this may have been of great cost to Coleshill were smothered when further great work by Recci saw his driven effort tipped up into the air by the gloves of Fullwood, though when the ball fell back to head height it was to be Luke Edwards who was first to the ball, heading opportunistically home at the far post. Surprisingly little pressure was put onto the hosts in the late stages of the game, and so when Dean Baker made sure of the win with a successful finish off the rebounds of Neil Kitching's saved effort, it was a deserved finish to a game which Coleshill had controlled for the most part. The response from the players for this evening's game will please manager Carl Adams, who will concentrate on League matters once more as Coleshill visit Malvern on Saturday.
Team: Craig Johnson, Leyiso Recci, Luke Edwards, Jason Lanns, Steve Hakner (Neil Kitching), Daniel Dineen, Jon Powis, Liam Givans, Chris Gumery, Matty Robinson (Barry Fitzharris), Dean Baker.
