COLESHILL GIVAN A LIFELINE
The sweetest of strikes late in the game by Liam Givans gave Coleshill their first and only league win out of five games this October, the goal providing the only memorable moment in a largely non-descript fixture between two struggling sides.
The recent form of both sides made it a game neither could afford to lose, with this determination not to taste defeat seeping through into the first 45 minutes, a period which served up entertainment at a premium. The type of slow start that has plagued Coleshill’s month occurred once again, with little imagination and only a handful of openings that were generally wasted. The impressive Michael William saw an attempted cross clatter the top of the crossbar; whilst Danny Carter couldn’t find the target with the chances he was given. Seemingly devoid of confidence, the striker curled a shot high over the Bridgnorth goal and glanced another painfully wide when it seemed easier to score.
Bridgnorth matched their hosts in terms of half chances, with Andy Rich keeping the unfamiliar Coleshill backline busy, but couldn’t find a happy medium with his shooting, wildly finding the trees behind the goal with one attempt before passing the ball tamely into the hands of Craig Johnson later on. A penalty shout from the visitors seemed legitimate enough, but the referee’s opinion was the one that mattered, and no penalty was awarded.
Coleshill took the opportunity to re-group at half time, and came out having upped the tempo. Bridgnorth found themselves increasingly in their own half, and were let off the hook when Dean Baker’s shot from the edge of the area took a heavy deflection to send it marginally wide of the post. Baker’s physical presence led him to receiving the best opportunity of the match so far, when Craig Thomas’ corner kick drifted all the way to the far post, where Baker could only contrive to head wide.
Matty Robinson had a shot turned behind by the ‘keeper, before Bridgnorth themselves had two golden opportunities to grab the points. Robbie Millington had a great chance on the edge of the area, space opening up for a shot, but the ball was blocked before it could reach Craig Johnson in Coleshill’s goal. Millington went one closer with a one on one opportunity, but Johnson was the saviour, getting in the way of the shot before Levi Bailey could pick up the pieces and clear.
With the major chances of the game spurned, the game seemed destined to finish goalless, which would have been a fair reflection of a tedious game. Liam Givans had other ideas though, and when he struck from all of twenty yards, everyone on the field watched the ball float into the top corner, a goal worthy of deciding any game. The quality of the goal matched its importance, as Coleshill look to match the form that saw them climb the FA Cup ladder but has since evaded them, but with a Birmingham Senior Cup game against Birmingham City on Tuesday, the near future is looking somewhat brighter.
Team: Craig Johnson, Barry Fitzharris, Jason Lanns, Levi Bailey, Jon Powis, Michael William, Liam Givans, Andy Cameron, Rob Freeman (Craig Thomas), Danny Carter (Matty Robinson), Dean Baker.
