BLUES BLITZ ELIMINATES PROUD COLESHILL
Coleshill Town rolled out the welcome mat for Birmingham City's young crop of promising reserves on Tuesday night at Pack Meadow, but fatigue towards the end of the glamour tie for Coleshill prevented them from causing an upset.
The biggest compliment that any spectator can pay to Coleshill Town is that rarely was a gulf in class too notable, and when Danny Carter opened the scoring, the Midlands Alliance side could have been forgiven for thinking that a shock may be on the cards. The tireless Matty Robinson coaxed a pass through to Danny Carter, who managed to keep his composure to lift the ball over Colin Doyle and into the net as celebrations began for the home supporters. Town were almost sent crashing back down to earth when Dan Preston guided a header fractionally wide of the far post from a set piece from the visitors, before Nathan Redmond dragged a shot wide from a similar distance also from a free kick.
Coleshill more than handled themselves in the first half though, and Carter may have added a second, floating over the crossbar. The striker's earlier goal for Town was emulated by a Birmingham City forward with just over five minutes of the half remaining, as Akwasi Asante caught Craig Johnson off his line, dipping a shot in off the underside of the bar to level the scoring, somewhat harsh on the hosts who had battled well in an attempt to protect their lead into the break, but to no avail.
Birmingham City constructed little in front of goal in the early stages of the second half despite seeing plenty of possession, but Enric Valles' inswinging free kick from the left flank certainly troubled Johnson, who managed to tip the ball over to diffuse the danger. There was a golden opportunity for Matty Robinson at the other end, as the diminutive predator glanced a header off target from Liam Givans' pinpoint cross, the ball whistling the wrong side of the post as relieved sighs were let out in the Blues camp.
Although Coleshill matched the up and coming stars of the Premier League outfit for an hour of the game, Blues always held an all too potent threat in attack, characterised by a spectacular individual goal by Jakob Hronec to send the visitors in front. The Slovakian winger negotiated his way into the centre of the penalty area through a corridor of space, dancing past several defenders along the way before dispatching the ball beyond Johnson as the backline looked on ruefully. The gap was almost widened when Craig Thomas almost put into his own net, fortuitously finding the upright, as Johnson made a brave block before Asante wildly shot over.
In stark contrast to the elegance of Hronec's strike for City was Alpaslan Ozturk's conversion on 65 minutes, a scramble from Redmond's corner which resulted in the right back heading home at the far post to virtually kill the game. One of the contributing factors which made this contest such a riveting one was Coleshill's response to falling behind, as they never let Birmingham become comfortable, and Carter was unlucky not to reduce the arrears with a crisp strike steered behind the goal. These forays into the final third became few and far between, as the soon to be victors applied copious amounts of icing to the cake in stoppage time.
First came a sensational shot from Nathan Redmond, the 16 year old hammered the ball from a full thirty yards out, the far corner of the net the destination for the wonderfully placed effort as the fourth goal served as a late illumination to the game. Enric Valles completed the scoring in the final seconds, a sweet finish low across Johnson ending the rout as the final whistle ended an entertaining encounter at Pack Meadow. Ultimately, it could be said that the scoreline flattered Birmingham City, though their superior enterprise, ball retention and accuracy in front of goal paid off as they marched on to the third round of the Birmingham Senior Cup.

NB. Danny Carter's goal against Birmingham City means he joins a very exclusive club. This was only the fourth time that Coleshill have played a professional team in a competitive match in their 116 year history, and only two other players have scored in those games.
Last season Matty Robinson scored against Burton Albion, also in the Birmingham Senior Cup, in a 4-1 defeat.
Coleshill played Birmingham City in the Birmingham Senior Cup in 1988 and after a 0-0 draw at Pack Meadow, they then drew 1-1 at St Andrews with "The Evening Mail" stating "Tate scored for Coleshill in the 1st half". This was in fact a nickname, the full name of the scorer being centre forward John Taylor. Coleshill won 3-2 on penalties, (no record of scorers), and then went on to play Wolverhampton Wanderers at Molineux where they lost 3-0 to an almost full strength Wolves team.
