Coleshill Town 1 v 1 Ellesmere Rangers

Saturday 13th November 2010
Baker Joiner Midland Alliance
Coleshill Town 1 v 1 Ellesmere Rangers
Coleshill: Steve Hakner 30.
Ellesmere: Chris Gumery O.G. 34.

A second successive 1-1 draw at Pack Meadow saw Coleshill struggle to make up ground on the rest of the league, another tepid display preventing them from finishing off a game that was there for the taking.
Full back Steven Hakner gave the hosts a lead with a stunning effort, but it took just four minutes for Ellesmere to reply, an extremely unfortunate own goal by Chris Gumery which ultimately turned out to be the final goal in a quiet ninety minutes.
Coleshill’s attempts to get into their stride early were in vein as Ellesmere repelled their hosts, though an early chance saw Danny Carter break through on goal. The off colour forward fluffed his lines though, lashing over the bar. It was a relief when the lead was taken on the half hour mark, Chris Gumery with a darting run up the right wing, cutting inside to play a square ball into the area. Carter played a dummy to allow Steven Hakner to rifle a roaring shot into the roof of the net to complete his powerful thirty yard run.
As spectacular as the opener was, the lead wouldn’t last as Ellesmere levelled in fortuitous fashion. A low cross into the box could have taken a touch from anyone, but it was Chris Gumery who would apply the decisive touch practically on the goal line as Rangers bagged a goal against the run of play.
The only further action in the first half took place in Ellesmere’s half, as Coleshill missed decent openings which they would later regret. Danny Carter took a lick of paint from the top of the crossbar with a 25 yard free kick, before Hakner’s low cross saw Carter and Powis’ shots blocked in a congested box.
If either side planned to step up the pace in order to take all three points in the second half they did a great job of disguising it, as both goalkeepers enjoyed a continuation of their relaxed first half display. Coleshill did find the net through substitute Ashley Robinson, a well placed header into the far corner ruled out for offside. Gary Meredith came closest for the visitors in the second period, a free header directed only into Mark Hadden’s hands, but it was to be Town to finish strongly, Scott Smith curling an effort over the target after Tom Wilmore’s effort was deflected wide by the referee.
One point is a disappointing result from a game which Coleshill dominated, especially with an unenviable away tie at Westfields in midweek.

Team: Simon Hands, Barry Fitzharris (Ashley Robinson), Leyiso Recci, Jason Lanns, Steve Hakner, Jon Powis, Daniel Dineen (Michael William), Tom Wilmore, Liam Givans, Chris Gumery (Scott Smith), Danny Carter.
