FAILURE TO CONVERT RESULTS IN DRAW WITH CHURCH

An absorbing contest at Pack Meadow on Saturday saw the points shared as Danny Carter scored his third in two games, with Steven Hakner netting in his second consecutive home game either side of a brace by Ross Dempster.
An energetic start by both sides saw an early spell of attractive football, Alvechurch almost taking the lead when Charisma Agbonlahor’s cross from the left was turned across the face of the goal by a forward, as the visiting side showed little fear. Coleshill responded instantaneously when Carter’s inswinging cross from the left wing found Ashley Robinson at the far post, though true connection wasn’t possible due to Robinson needing to stretch to reach the ball.
A spectacular opening goal suited the game, as Hakner’s cross was headed on by Chris Gumery, Carter meeting the ball in mid-air to back heel the ball into the far corner, as the exciting striker begins to find his form again. Things went from bad to worse for Alvechurch as two players had to be replaced before the 25 minute mark, including the speedy Agbonlahor.
Both Carter and Gumery proved to be a handful for the remainder of the half, though neither had their radar set well enough, as a few wayward efforts prevented the gap from widening. Alvechurch went close from a free kick opportunity, the ball headed onto the post, and their equaliser eventually came on the stroke of half time. Having failed to make a great opportunity pay with several half chances blocked in the Alvechurch area, Coleshill left themselves exposed at the back, the resulting break seeming effortless as Ross Dempster fed off of a square ball, beating the offside trap to glide into the net to change the mood completely before the referee’s whistle.
If the equaliser was sloppy on Coleshill’s part, Dempster’s second goal thirty seconds after the restart took the concentration levels to a new low, a few incisive passes from kick off and Dempster was through on goal again, rolling a composed finish into the far corner in textbook fashion.
The goal combined with other factors to ensure it was a stuttering start to the second period for Coleshill, but once they had warmed to the task, the travelling defence was kept on its toes. A Steven Hakner free kick was met by Robinson, the towering header wide of the target, before a boost was given to the hosts as an Alvechurch defender received his marching orders by the referee after bringing Gumery down just outside the penalty area.
Though nothing was created from the resulting free kick, Coleshill were level soon after, Jon Powis’ cross headed towards goal by Robinson, the effort saved well by the Alvechurch ‘keeper, but Hakner was able to pounce and score with his own headed attempt, the score levelled once again.
Several late opportunities were squandered by the hosts, including a header by Robinson cleared off the line, as well as a strike from Wilmore spinning over the target via a deflection from a blue shirt. The late pressure didn’t pay off though, a draw slightly harsh on an enterprising Coleshill.
