Baker Joiner Midland Alliance
Coleshill Town 0 v 1 Kirby Muxloe
Scorer: Stuart Verrall 18.
Attendance: 18.
A poor week of results for Coleshill Town left the side's chances of a top half finish in doubt, as a 2-1 home defeat in midweek against Rocester was added to with a 1-0 win by Kirby Muxloe courtesy of a headed goal by Stuart Verrall.
On a sunny afternoon at Pack Meadow, Carl Adams will feel aggrieved that his side couldn't claim any of the points on offer, as the hosts played some very reasonable football in stages. Kirby were restricted to just one attack in the first half, and were extremely fortunate to find the net from that venture forward. A cross into the box on the 18th minute was headed across goal by Stuart Verrall, the prolific striker watching as the ball beat Craig Johnson in the Coleshill goal.
The Colemen's early play was attractive and clinical, with Richie Allen particularly able to fashion a number of chances. Allen curled a shot over from 20 yards, before rattling the crossbar with a dipping half volley from similar range, but the inability to convert chances into goals was punished shortly afterwards by Verrall. It wasn't all smiles for Kirby in the sunshine though, as suspected ligament damage to one of the visitors' defenders caused a stoppage in the first half, the injury sustained in a coming together in the box, though little foul play was present.
With the clock running down on the first half, Loyiso Recci tried his luck from the edge of the box, his effort dragged wide of the near post, before Michael William also fired off target after carrying the ball down the left wing and across the penalty area.
Short of these wayward attempts on goal though, Coleshill struggled to find their cutting edge, and the overall performance detiorated in quality as the half progressed. Luckily though, Kirby very rarely entered Coleshill's territory, a pattern which continued after the half time break. Richie Allen added another attempt to his collection, this time seeing his volley tipped wide by the goalkeeper. This shot on target unfortunately didn't serve as a foundation to build on, and Carl Adams was keen to shake things up as the misfiring Michael William was taken off along with Chris Gumery. Substitute Chris Lait hungrily snapped up the ball at every opportunity, full of endeavour and vision. The opposition's defence found it difficult to contain Lait, who ran at them tirelessly, seeing an effort end up the wrong side of the post on one occasion.
Kirby, aware that their lead was in danger in the final fifteen minutes, began to play in a more ambitious style, and may have added a second if it wasn't for a goal line clearance by Recci and a subsequent save from Craig Johnson. To say that a second for Kirby would have been flattering would be an understatement, and the very fact that they took maximum points from this fixture speaks volumes about Coleshill's current lack of ability to make the most of their chances.
Team: Craig Johnson, Loyiso Recci, Jason Lanns, Levi Bailey, Jon Powis, Michael William (Chris Lait), Barry Fitzharris, Richard Allen, Steve Hakner, Chris Gumery (?), Jason Ramsey.

SUNDAY MERCURY WROTE
Kirby Muxloe won by the same margin (1-0) at Coleshill Town.
N.B. With only three games left to play Coleshill are still four points short of matching last season's total of 63 points, which has been manager Carl Adam's aim over the last few weeks. After the difficulties he has encountered this season, to overhaul that total, and throw in the excellent cup runs, then it would probably be considered a job well done. Coleshill finished 8th last season but are unlikely to finish this campaign higher than their current 12th. Last term they scored 77 goals, 61 so far this year, and conceded 55, compared with 51 so far this season. If you take into account the loss of Danny Carter and Matty Robinson you can see where the lack of goals has been costly but the defence has looked, on the whole, a very solid unit.
