COLESHILL were unable to make heavy second-half pressure count as they slumped to a 1-0 defeat.

Coleshill enjoyed the better of the opening stages and twice winger Chris Laite got free but wasted opportunities to open the scoring.

Westfields keeper Matt Gwynne then produced good saves when he fielded shots from Danny Carter and Steve Harker.

The visitors had a chance to open the scoring in the 30th minute when striker Richard Kear was brought down.

However, his free-kick from 20 yards out the ball cleared the Coleshill bar.

Craig Jones then hit a fierce drive just wide of the far post when well placed as the sides went in goalless at the break.

After the interval, Westfields began to take up the running and broke the deadlock in the 58th minute when Aaron Hopkinson chased a through ball from Jones and hit a tremendous low drive into the corner of the net.

Coleshill started to take control and Carter got in a fine far post header only for Matt Gwynne to produce a brilliant one-handed save.

Gwynne was then called in action again when he punched clear another cross as Coleshill threw everything at Westfields.

WESTFIELDS BACK TO WINNING WAYS

Westfields got back to winning ways after 2 home MFA league defeats to win away from home on Saturday to maintain 2nd position in the league table when they gave an inspired second-half performance to withstand heavy pressure from Coleshill Town to keep a clean sheet and gain 3 very valuable points.

Coleshill went into the game with 3 consecutive league wins under their belt but they could not pierce the Westfields’ defence in which inspirational captain Scott Jackson had an outstanding game.

Coleshill enjoyed the better of the opening stages and twice winger Chris Laite got free but wasted good opportunities to open the scoring, then Westfields’ keeper Matt Gwynne, called up to replace Jamie Moore, produced good saves when he fielded shots from Danny Carter and Steve Harker.

Westfields had a chance to open the scoring in the 30th minute when striker Richard Kear was brought down but from Kear’s free-kick from 20 yards out the ball cleared the Coleshill bar, then Craig Jones hit a fierce drive just wide of the far post when well placed as the 2 sides went in goal-less at the break.

After the interval, Westfields began to take up the running and after both Carl Morgan and Craig Jones had put over teasing crosses Westfields broke the deadlock in the 58th minute when Aaron Hopkinson chased a through ball from Craig Jones and hit a tremendous low drive into the corner of the net to put Westfields ahead.

Westfields then had a half chance to increase their lead on the hour when Adam Newbury worked an opening for Richard Kear but he was tackled as he was about to fire home his shot.

Coleshill then sent on their substitutes and began to get back into the game but Jackson and Joel Edwards produce some strong tackling. Then in the 85th minute it looked like Coleshill would equalise when from a left wing corner Danny Carter got in a fine far post header but Matt Gwynne produced a brilliant one-handed save to tip the ball over the bar to prevent the equaliser.

Gwynne then was in action again when he punched clear another cross as Coleshill threw everything at Westfields for an equaliser. Scott Jackson then marshalled his defence well in the final few moments to get Westfields through some anxious moments as Westfields chalked up their 12th league win of the season.

Westfields: Gwynne, Dingri, Edwards, Harris, Jackson, Newbury, Jones, Hopkinson, Glover, Kear, Morgan.

Subs: Pearson for Kear 80th, Holloway for Morgan 82nd, Bowen for Hopkinson 90th.

Subs not used: Moore (GK), Gwynne (Ryan).
