Postby Alan Beckett » Tue Apr 10, 2012 11:59 am

Monday 9th April 2012
Midland Alliance
Coventry Sphinx 1 v 0 Coleshill Town
Scorer: Matt Brown.
Attendance: 70.

Team: Chris Jay, David Tonks, Craig Gasiewski (David Brush), Liam Mansell, Carl Adams, Chris Charles, Barry Fitzharris, Sam Wilson, Danny Carter, Steve Hakner, Allando Davis (Jack Jeys, (Jason Lanns)). Sub not used Liam Givans.

Coleshill generally don't do very well against Sphinx, although they did do the double over them two seasons ago and gained four points last season, so a defeat was only to be expected but, lets look at the facts!

Sphinx are now top of the league a point ahead of Westfields, with 26 wins, they were the team of the month for March due to one defeat and seven wins in their last ten games. Coleshill on the other hand, are 5th from bottom with only 12 wins this season, and only a point above the bottom three.

Now the game! Sphinx had the upper hand in the first half with the slope and the wind giving them the advantage and just about deserved to be in front by the only goal headed over the line mid way through the half. The second period was dominated by Coleshill and just how they never equalised, or even took all three points was purely down to the home keeper who made several top class saves at point blank range. Chris Jay at the other end was rarely troubled and had one of the easiest afternoons of the season.

Town and Sphinx have done battle together for many, many years in the Alliance and Mid Com but they have had much, much better sides than this and not challenged for the title. Does that mean that the standard of football isn't what it used to be or did I just see Sphinx on an off day? Best of luck to them because I think they are a well run club and something Coleshill would do well to emulate, but champions of the Midland Alliance? I can't see it myself!

COLESHILL HERALD WROTE

Coleshill slip closer to danger zone after fruitless Easter

COLESHILL suffered a narrow defeat at the hands of title-chasing Sphinx.

Generally, Coleshill don't have much luck against Sphinx and were not expecting too much.

Sphinx had the upper hand in the first half with the slope and the wind giving them the advantage.

They just about deserved to be in front by the only goal headed over the line by former Atherstone striker Matt Brown midway through the half.

The second half was dominated by Coleshill but somehow they were unable to find an equaliser.

That was purely down to the home keeper Carl O'Neil who made several top-class saves at point-blank range.

Man of the match Steve Hakner had the best chances for Coleshill while Danny Carter saw a great volley saved by O'Neil.

At the other end, Chris Jay was rarely troubled and had one of the easiest afternoons of the season.

COVENTRY EVENING TELEGRAPH WROTE

Coventry Sphinx still have title ambitions

COVENTRY Sphinx may have forgone promotion to the Evo-Stik Southern League next season should they win the Midland Alliance title this term but that’s not going to stop them bidding to finish top of the table after moving into pole position following Monday’s 1-0 win over Coleshill Town.

In-form Matt Brown’s solitary strike was enough to earn Danny McSheffrey’s championship challengers maximum points and hoist them to the peak of the division and ahead of Westfields with just three fixtures remaining.

Following Saturday’s rather disappointing 1-1 draw at Studley, where central defender and long-serving Terry Ward headed in a last-gasp equaliser, Sphinx again had to call upon all of their battling qualities to see off the Colemen thanks to the opportunism of Brown, who netted his fifth goal in as many outings with his first-half strike.
