An old football saying but this definitely was a "six pointer". With both teams far to close to the relegation zone, neither side could afford to lose but with the home team just above the visitors a draw would have been enough to maintain the gap.
There wasn't much finesse for the healthy crowd to enjoy on an awful bobbly pitch, but plenty of endeavour and enthusiasm! Coleshill came the closest to scoring in the first half as Richard Gregory's fine shot was tipped onto the bar by former Town keeper Paul Hathaway and somehow the visiting defence managed to clear the ball as it bounced in the six yard box with Danny Carter waiting to tap home. Coleshill were then awarded a very fortuitous penalty. During his time with Coleshill, Hathaway had a reputation for saving penalties and he continued that record with Atherstone as he saved Danny Carter's weak effort.

Goalless at half time but Coleshill had the edge over a young and inexperienced Atherstone. The home side finally took the lead to the relief of the home contingent. Carl Adams floated in a free kick, Gregory controlled, cut inside and set up the onrushing David Brush who shot along the ground and into the corner of the net through a packed penalty box giving Hathaway no chance. This was Brush's first goal since returning to the club and may just have been his most important. Chris Lloyd had only just replaced the off colour Danny Carter when he so nearly increased the lead as he chipped the keeper but his effort went just wide of the post. The game immediately switched to the other end as the referee threw Atherstone a life line with another soft penalty. Unfortunately for the visitors Chris Jay in the Coleshill goal emulated Hathaway and saved the spot kick. The action was really hotting up now as within minutes Coleshill did double the score. A goal kick was sent into the Atherstone half, Allando Davis somehow beat his marker to flick the ball on with his head and quick as a flash Lloyd was onto it, he then rounded the keeper and shot home. Jubilation from Coleshill as it appeared the game was over! No chance! Barry Fitzharris needlessly fouled in the area and Atherstone had their second penalty. This time Connor Baker took the kick and beat Chris Jay, 2-1 game on! Atherstone tried their best to equalise as Coleshill sat back. Chris Jay tipped an effort over the bar and Chris Socket should have done better as he blasted over the bar from very close range, then Allando Davis nearly sealed the win for Coleshill when he burst clear only to drag his shot wide of the post. Coleshill hung on for an historic and memorable win to all but banish their relegation worries but Atherstone now have it all to do to avoid the dreaded drop.

Coleshill are now four points clear of the bottom three with just Dunkirk and Highgate to play.

Atherstone are third from bottom with Highgate three points behind them and Ellesmere and Heather one and three points ahead of them respectively. They have Studley and Westfields to play.

SUNDAY MERCURY WROTE

David Brush and Chris Lloyd scored for Coleshill Town as they beat Atherstone Town 2-1 in their relegation clash, Connor Baker hitting a consolation from the penalty spot.

COLESHILL HERALD WROTE

Coleshill claim vital win as Adders are forced to sweat

COLESHILL claimed the local bragging rights and secured three much needed points in the battle to avoid the drop.

Both sides missed penalties in an eventful derby where all three goals came in the second half.

The Adders, who remain in relegation trouble, were soon on the attack and home keeper Chris Jay challenged Dale Farley unfairly as the striker bore down on goal.

Nothing came of the subsequent free kick and, although Farley was able to continue, the injury sustained meant he left the pitch soon after the break.

The rest of the first half was a scrappy affair.

Steve Hakner hit the cross bar for the home team in the 12th minute but their best chance was a penalty kick awarded after 30 minutes.

Carl Stringer was penalised for a challenge on Richard Gregory but Danny Carter's spot-kick was well saved by Paul Hathaway diving low to his left.

The ball then clipped the cross bar as David Brush followed up.

The second half was more eventful and Coleshill went ahead in the 52nd minute when Brush fired in from 12 yards after being given too much space in the area.

The Adders responded and David Boal and Ben Ashby combined well in the 66th minute only for the former to be brought down.

However, Jordan Holmes' penalty kick was well saved by Jay.

Coleshill doubled their advantage on 67 minutes when Carter rounded Hathaway and tapped the ball into the empty net.

Connor Baker scored a penalty after 75 minutes to reduce the arrears but the Adders were unable to force an equaliser after that.

Both Ashby and Chris Sockett should have done better with goal chances in the last five minutes but it was Carl Adams' Coleshill side who came out on top.

Atherstone assistant manager Craig Ridsdill said "Personally, I think a draw would have been a fair result and it had draw written all over it.

"They shaded the first half but I thought we had the edge in the second and were on top in the last 10 minutes.

"We just couldn't force the equaliser in the end. It was disappointing but you move on and the focus is now Studley."
