MATCH REPORT
SATURDAY 16TH AUGUST 2003
MIDLAND COMBINATION PREMEIR
COLESHILL TOWN 1 V 3 MEIR KA

Coleshill’s season got off to the worst possible start with defeat to a hard working but otherwise ordinary Meir. Coleshill will surely face more difficult tasks this year, but will have to raise their standards to a much higher level if they are to achieve their ambitions of pushing the top teams. After an impressive pre-season where Coleshill looked on a par with R.C. Warwick, Atherstone and Tamworth Reserves, the confidence in the camp was sky high. But all that changed in twenty minutes when the visitors virtually had the game wrapped up with two goals without reply. Keeper Brian Cant fumbled a cross on 13 minutes to leave Daniel Steele the simple task of heading home and although his first attempt hit the bar, the rebound was kind and he made no mistake the second time. On twenty minutes the ball was in the net again but the referee pulled play back for a penalty, which looked a harsh decision but the outcome in the end was fair, goal No 2, Steele again the scorer. Coleshill were given a lifeline when the referee awarded a second penalty for handball in the box following a free kick, again a harsh decision. New boy Craig Davies made no mistake from the spot to record the first of hopefully many goals for Coleshill, and his second nearly came within a minute as his 25 yard strike thundered against the bar. Davies was one of few who came away from this game with any credit and was awarded the Man of the Match for his efforts. Coleshill did have the better of the play for the last ten minutes of the half, Andy Hayward going close twice, and had they kept up the momentum could well have got back into the game but Meir regained their two goal advantage within a minute of the restart. A deep cross from the left hit the far post and Scott Reaney acted the fastest to lift the ball over the advancing Cant in the Coleshill goal. Meir could and should have gone on to score more goals as Coleshill’s defence continually went missing whilst at the other end chances were few and far between. Tempers began to fray as the points slipped away and Hayward, Davies, Harden and Davis all saw yellow cards. This was not what the management team of Tony Gormley and Dave Morbey expected from their squad but with several players away on holiday and new signings still a possibility, all is not lost.

Team:- Brian Cant, Adam Whyte, Frank Woodburn, Allan Thomas, Carl Smith (Jon Davis), Andy Hayward, Giovanni Finesci, Lawrence Shannon, Craig Davies, James Connor, Chris Gray (Jamie Harden). Sub not used Tony Gormley.

M.O.M. Craig Davies.
