Match Report
Saturday 6th September 2003
Midland Combination Premier Division
Rugby Town 5 v 2 Coleshill Town
Scorer: Craig Davies 2.

Coleshill were desperate to put a poor start to the season behind them when travelling to Rugby who were also under pressure. The home team have set their sights high and are expecting to be amongst the title chasers but three defeats already is not championship form. Town Manager Tony Gormley has been disappointed with the constant chopping and changing due to holidays and injuries but his plans where once again disrupted resulting in a scratch side taking the field with Gormley playing himself in the unusual position of centre back.

Amazingly Coleshill started brightly and got the perfect fill-up when Craig Davies scored with less than five minutes on the clock, his left foot strike bulging the net. Rugby's tension showed far more than Coleshill's and with 15mins gone the home team never tested the visitors makeshift defence but it all changed when Lee Colvin got caught in possession on the edge of his own box. Suddennly the ball was in the back of the net and Rugby's heads went up. On thirty minutes Rugby were given a further boost when the referee gave them a penalty for nothing. A fall in the box with little or no contact was enough to convince the official to award the kick and Rugby gladly took advantage. It was three by half time as Rugby slowly grew in confidence and Coleshill's ebbed away.

The second half became a stroll as Rugby scored No4 and 5, and hit the woodwork twice as well, but Coleshill's shining light Craig Davies scored his second on 57 minutes when released by Mitchell Thompson and should have made it a hat trick when clear again but he dallied and the keeper saved at his feet.

Coleshill have injuries pilling up and are desperately low in confidence but it is time to close ranks. A siege mentality is needed with everyone pulling together and refusing to be defeated. The nice football is great when you are winning but grit and determanation is what is needed at this crucial time.

Team:- Danny Moseley, Chris Gray, Tony Gormley, Lee Colvin, Andy Hayward, Mitchell Thompson, Rob Burns, Steve Groom, Lee Dempster (Lawrence Shannon), Aeon Sawyers, Graig Davies. Subs not used Dave Morbey, Scott Gormley.
