Saturday 10th October 2003
Midland Combination Premier Division
Romulus 3 v 1 Coleshill Town
Scorer: Danny Carter.

When visiting the league leaders with a struggling side who are low in confidence, the last thing you need is supposed senior players crying off with lame excuses, and then having to draft in untried Youth team players. But Manager Tony Gormley was left with no alternative but to include no less than six teenagers in his squad, two of which were making their 1st team debut. With the departure of Ass Manager Dave Morbey others are finding that walking away is an easy option but the performance of the youngsters put them to shame and showed that although it is going to be a tough winter, Coleshill Town will survive and eventually prosper.

Adam Whyte, Lee Dempster and Scott Wilson were all carrying injuries but rallied when the call came from Gormley and gave their all for as long as they could. James Butterworth fresh from captaining the youth team was in the starting line up and Brett Dalton made the bench. An impressive, experienced Romulus were always going to come out on top in this encounter but they were made to work hard for the points and were never totally comfortable. The home sides three goals all came in the first half when they clinically capitalised on defensive mistakes or inexperience. But Coleshill held their nerve and had their moments. The young defence was marshalled well by old head Frank Woodburn. The midfield, including Craig Davies in an unfamiliar role, worked tirelessly to stifle the opposition and the front two of Mitchell Thompson and Danny Carter, dwarfed by their two giant markers, showed good movement and quick feet and held the ball up well. Carter had the best chance of the first 45 minutes when he jinked free from the defence but hit his shot straight at the keeper. In an identical move in the second half he confidently lobbed the ball over the home stopper for Coleshill’s only goal. Keeper Danny Moseley made several first class saves including a second half penalty which meant Coleshill won the second period 1-0, just reward for their commitment and work rate.

Team:- Danny Moseley, James Butterworth, Scott Wilson (Brett Dalton), Frank Woodburn, Adam Whyte (Scott Gormley), Neil Anderson, Tony Gormley, Craig Davies, Lee Dempster, Danny Carter, Mitchell Thompson.
