Coventry Sphinx 2 v 1 Coleshill Town

Postby Alan Beckett » Wed Oct 15, 2003 11:55 am

TUESDAY 14th October 2003
MIDLAND COMBINATION PREMIER
COVENTRY SPHINX 2 v 1 COLESHILL TOWN
Scorer: Craig Davies.

This game was to be Tony Gormey's last one in charge as he stepped down immediately after the final whistle. Gormley is not walking away from the club but is will to stay on in whatever capacity he is needed. Joint management duo Pete Wilson and Mick Beadle will take over team affairs on a caretaker basis while the club advertise the vacant position. Wilson and Beadle have indicated they will apply for the job and if the can turn it round in the next few weeks, they look to be favourites.

For the game against Sphinx, Gormley again struggled to field a side relying on short-term replacements and youth team players. Coleshill usually struggle against Sphinx as they are a big powerful side, and this game proved no different but Town stood up to the challenge and had the home team worried until they finally ran out of steam in the last quarter of the game. Danny Moseley pulled off several outstanding saves to keep the Sphinx forwards at bay, bringing the comment from the home management "Trust us to play a team with Gordon Banks in goal". The ten players in front of Moseley worked tirelessly to restrict Sphinx and the hard work paid off when Danny Carter jinked his way to the penalty area before feeding Craig Davies who rounded the keeper and shot into an empty net for his twelfth of the season.

A 1-0 half time score lifted everybody in the dressing room but Sphinx came out for the second half with renewed vigour and Town had their backs against the wall, even with the slope and the wind now in their favour. As Coleshill tired, so Sphinx plied on the pressure and a minute after having a penalty plea turned down they finally breached the Town rearguard with a firm header. If Coleshill were lucky to get away with the penalty decision they were unlucky with the winning goal as several players seemed to impede Moseley before bundling the ball over the goal line. Moseley felt hard done by and was booked for his persistent decent. Suddenly Sphinx were world beaters and gloated in their eventual victory but they were pushed all the way by the makeshift visitors. The new management will have to bring in new players, but the commitment and attitude is present in most of the remaining squad so they will have something to work on in the next few weeks.

Team:- Danny Moseley, Neil Anderson, Frank Woodburn, Lee McClean (James Butterworth), Adam Whyte, Pete Hall, Tony Gormley, Gallagher, Mitchell Thompson, Craig Davies, Danny Carter (Gary Horsburgh). Sub not used Brett Dalton.
