MIDLAND COMBINATION PREMEIR DIVISION
SATURDAY 17TH JANUARY 2004
COLESHILL TOWN 0 V 3 HIGHGATE UNITED
On Thursday there looked to be no chance that this game would take place as the Packmeadow pitch was drenched in water and although the ground was heavy, the groundstaff did a magnificent job and the pitch played remarkably well. Manager Mick Beadle had virtually a full squad to choose from apart from the continued absence of James McKenzie. Steve Lees returned to the defence after a seven-day suspension and Chris Gee dropped to the bench.
In a first half of little action, neither side looked capable of breaking the deadlock, the game having 0-0 written all over it. Mitchell Thompson had an appeal for a penalty turned down, Craig Jones continued his fine form with a couple of saves and Pete Hall, still searching for his first Coleshill goal, had a shot pushed round the post on the stroke of halftime.
The second half started in similar vain but Coleshill slightly lost their shape when Frank Woodburn had to retire due to a head injury. On 51 minutes Steve Lees got caught upfield during a Town attack and Highgate capitalised on the huge whole in the defence for Scott Baker to break clear and lob the advancing Jones in the Coleshill goal. The game lulled again as both sides struggled to find any rhythm. Coleshill huffed and puffed looking for the equaliser but goalscoring is a problem at the moment and as with Brocton two weeks ago they paid the penalty in the dying minutes. On 89minutes Lee Hatfield scored United's second to ensure the points and to add insult to injury Lee Martin scored the third in injury time to give the scoreline a very flattering look for Highgate but an depressing one for Coleshill.
Team:- Craig Jones, Ashley Downer, Derek Wilkes, Steve Lees, Frank Woodburn (Simon Bradbury), Gary Falconbridge (Chris Gee), Carl Smith, Chris Davies, Pete Hall (Jamie Cartwright), Mitchell Thompson, Kevin Wagstaff.
